  1. In both cases you are not talking about what would be commonly referred to as a medicine man/shaman. Besides, neither addresses the question as a whole. So any conclusion you arrive at with those two examples would only refer to those two examples and practically tell us nothing about ourselves. You would need to build some sort of case to show how those two examples relate to the question we have now. Reason requires details. Faith glosses them over.
  2. In your medicine man/shaman example, what actual society are you referring to? I am only asking because it is a thought that requires scrutiny.
  3. No, your 'belief without proof' is faith and is a completely internal function. Something spoken in public comes under increasing scrutiny and demands reason or reasonableness. In fact, more and more people are going out of their way to scrub faith out in the public domain.
  4. Absolutely! And I can't wait until the next Fordian gaff or shenanigan. Rob F-King Ford is comedy gold!
  5. Come on Argus, only a complete babbling idiot would think like that. AS IF the affects of Residential Schools only "happened long ago." Let's put it this way, if your spouse or child happens to get viciously raped, and even murdered, come on here and we'll tell you to stop whining because it's 'all in the past' and you should "get over it."
  6. When you agree that the sentiment is basically being lampooned. Or did you completely miss the reference to old Billy?
  7. Sure it is and always has been. Tell me what government is forcing "everyone" to "contribute tax dollars" to a particular cause.
  8. From the OP: I think this is an accountability scheme that is, quite frankly, long overdue. So the government is saying that if a NFP/Charity wants funding, they are going to have to show, in a tangible way, that they are doing what they say they are doing. I have no problem with that do you? The government is also opening up the rules with regard to how NFP/Charities can fundraise and access more money from the private sector. Some charities - hospital foundations and such - have massive lotteries which held key fundraising for their causes. Allowing more of this sort of thing or giving incentives for creating such "side businesses" can be a real boon to NFPs/Charities. Don't you think? There is the bit of a problem whereby the government might decide to de-fund those NFPs/Charities that do not fall in line with their goals or ideology. The government hasn't had any problem doing this thus far, so it shouldn't come as a surprise. However, such large scale de-funding is bad for business overall, but accountability rules are not.
  9. And thus faith is personal, reason is public.
  10. They didn't write the letter. Period. So who knows what they were thinking? But we know what Harper was thinking.
  11. Of course this song has nothing to do with Residential Schools and related matters, but is a sarcastic retort to someone who thinks themselves perfect and knows how to create a perfect world with themselves at the centre of it. "old billy" is a reference to William Shakespeare, more specifically the line in Henry VI, Part II: CADE I thank you, good people: there shall be no money; all shall eat and drink on my score; and I will apparel them all in one livery, that they may agree like brothers and worship me their lord. DICK The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers. I always admired the Eagles too, because they had a knack for pinpointing the assholes in our society.
  12. It a condition of employment as determined by fair and collective bargaining by the employer and representatives of the employees or a union. If you do not like the conditions of employment in a particular firm or sector, you are free to choose not to offend yourself.
  13. And they didn't.
  14. Who is saying rights are involved? Did they prevent him from leaving? Was the child afraid? Was it... dark? He called 911. That is an emergency response line. The phone number for "the police" is a little different. Because the people on the right are so bitter all the time. Otherwise, I agree. Did they prevent him from leaving? Was the child afraid? Was it... dark?
  15. Usually when there is humour in it. Do you have a personal problem with me doing that? Do you really need to ask? The whole plot is hilarious!
  16. What workplace forces "all workers" to pay union dues? "Everybody" was employed in the 1950's were they? Not quite "everybody" and not quite as many women. And let's not forget that the panacea of the 1950's came complete with government regulation, social programs, etc. IOW, the regulated market at work.
  17. Yes, the Right. Cranky old men berating the clouds in the sky. Always with the hypothetical strawman to make comparisons, but no real isight into reality. Of course, it never occurred that should David Miller had an encounter with Marg Delahunty in a halloween costume he might have played along and has some fun with it. Use it as PR. Increase his approval rating. But he likely wouldn't have called 911 that's for certain. More clouds pass by. More angry shouting follows.
  18. An interesting take on the OP story and another one in Toronto: Jury verdicts raise question: Has become acceptable for ‘bad people’ to be killed? Is it? Another lingering question is the amount of resources the police put into catching criminals who kill other criminals. In Toronto, there doesn't seem to be the same effort and who can blame them? In my most unsympathetic moments, I am inclined to applaud that sort of ethic, but how useful is it really, especially when the criminals start killing each other in the open, in areas not prone to such violence. In Ottawa this week, two known criminals were gunned down inside their tanning salon in a mall. Shooting death a payback: Cops I suppose the public element of the crime might put pressure on the police to apply just investigation, but what about those killings that are in areas prone to violence, the ghettos, etc? DO we care as much about justice in those situations?
  19. "There is this lady, dressed in a red viking warrior princess halloween costume, accosting me with a microphone claiming to be Marg Delahunty from Newfoundland. HALP! THEY ARE GONNA TO KILL ME!" Of course, this was after Rob F-King Ford was caught chuckling on camera. Release the tapes, we need to determine what sort of danger he was in. Clear the air Mayor Ford!
  20. How the workers "got away with it" was the freedom to associate. You are trying to disconnect the market from politics, social structures, etc. That model doesn't work because you are ignoring the ability of the public to make its own determinations, even if they do it piece-meal by sector. The Japanese manager does not exist outside these social structures. Tell me what the Japanese manager was doing when Tokyo was producing war material for Hirohito. Or what he was doing when Tokyo was being firebobmed. I suppose you'll say war is just another intrusive government program on the free market. His workers joined unions because "everyone else was?" LOFL! Funny how those social influences creep into the free market innit?
  21. Then there is no need for the CBC to retract or apologize.
  22. More and more the CBC come out to look like they don't cow down to any ideology and are capable of making fun of them all. They were doing it before it was cool. The only angry ones here are the frustrated right-wing entities because they lack a funny bone. David Miller was milquetoast compared to Rob F-King Ford, don't you understand that?
  23. Ah, the nice, neat little category of the "blind Harper-haters" because, you know, haters gonna hate. You risk bringing ridicule upon yourself via internet meme. (don't worry, you aren't the first) Oh wait. Has it occurred to you that 'back then' they were making their statements in context of a political situation with regard to their own constituencies? Do you even know what that means? Fact is, "the arrangement" has already been examined in a historical context and everyone is fairly certain what it meant. Love is blind innit?
