That's a good point. You'd have to be spectacularly stupid not to recognize jamming up traffic like that could cause some serious issues. Even if Christie really knew nothing (a big if, in my view), it has to call into question his ability as a leader. At the very least, he made some really bad choices in his senior people and didn't seem to know what was going on in his office.

In Kentucky, I doubt there are plenty of liberals, gun owners or not. Frankly, I'm sick of hearing this. Lots of people do stupid things some of the time. Some people do stupid things lots of the time. Here's the issue. If this goofy politician was doing something stupid with, say, a stapler, the worst that will happen is a minor injury. But she did a stupid thing with a firearm and it's only good luck that someone didn't wind up wearing the bullet. When you have people walking around armed all the time, the odds of this kind of thing happening go up. And the irony is that people justify the carry laws by citing personal safety.

Your faith in right wing politicians is soooo adorable!!! You probably believe Harper didn't know and Ford only smoked crack once, right? But I guess faith is what right wingers are all about. Faith in God in the absence of any evidence that s/he exists. Faith in markets in spite of the fact that they produce erratic, random results. And faith that right wing liars must be telling the truth. Good for you!! I admire your loyalty!

Or here's a crazy idea. You could just turn the dial and ignore him. I tried that with Harper but he's still wrecking the country. -
Wow, Tim. We're all in awe of how only you have the special power to recognize the one wingnut scientist smart enough to understand the real situation while the thousands of others are all wrong. Way to go.

Oh, come on. The good folks at E/M are kind enough to come on in and hire a few local folks for a few years while they rape and pillage the land, leaving it polluted and poisonous for centuries to come. Of course that's a great deal. You're just anti-progress. You want us all to go back to living in the jungle.

Even in the land of Watergate, this was a move that is breathtaking in its crass, banal sleaziness. Presidential hopeful Chris Christie's staff deliberately misused state resources to create a traffic jam in Fort Lee, New Jersey to punish the mayor for refusing to endorse Christie. For his part, Christie pulled a Stephen Harper by allowing his staff to take all the blame while he denied any knowledge of events. Christie did show more class than Harper in one respect - at least he apologized.

So are you arguing for the abiotic oil theory? If not, peak oil is a proven theory. -
And it's interesting to see Jim Flaherty doing his usual meddling in the domain of the Bank of Canada.

The Bank of Canada does not set long term interest rates - they are set by banks and the main influence is the bond market. The BoC sets the overnight rate which essentially establishes short term rates. I'm not sure what you heard on the radio but in the story, it says that Poloz believes that long term rates will rise due to the US central bank reducing the amount of bonds it will buy. I don't know whether it will hurt the economy but a sharp rise in mortgage rates will kill the housing market and could cause a collapse in prices. House prices could only be sustained at this level on the platform of very low interest rates. I don't think it would take very much of an interest rate hike to drastically change the affordability equation. That would cause a collapse in demand, creating a buyer's market. Most people who could keep on paying their mortgages would so do, hoping to wait out the price drop. However, if interest rates stayed high over an extended period, you would see people having to renew at much higher rates and many with negative equity.

.... from a bookcase. Does she make a practice of unloading her gun during meetings with other politicians? Maybe she'll start finding them too busy to meet with her in the future. Here's a quote that will make you feel better about all of the guns floating around in the US. Only in the gun nut capital of the world. Is she one of the "responsible gun owners" that the NRA spends so much time excusing?

Someday reason will prevail over organized religion
ReeferMadness replied to nwontariohunter's topic in Religion & Politics
There are lots of ceremonies that don't involve religion. There are funerals or "celebrations of life" that are not religion. Just like there are marriage ceremonies that don't involve religion. Ceremonies are inherently cultural, not inherently religious. -
Pay Levant no mind. He's Canada's answer to Ann Coulter. They have nothing to say and they're all about shock value. Ignore them and they will vanish.

Oh, here we have it. Please do enlighten us on how the kind Yankee overlords tried to save the poor ignorant Iraqis from themselves - but 8 years just wasn't long enough.

It's ironic, isn't it. I think Ford has been successful in turning himself into a victim in the eyes of many. See? All those left-wingers who are so sympathetic to gang bangers and child-molesters attack our hero for smoking crack once! -
It's certainly distressing that the public seems to have the attention span of a gnat. But there's still hope. I think the senate scandal has finally tainted Harper in the eyes of the public. And that taint will be tough to wash off.

Check the first graph in the Nanos link. It shows that Canadians are finally waking up to just how badly Harper and his knuckle-draggers are embarrassing us internationally. He's gotta be gone next year.
