August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Trump is correct. We let no cheese into Canada. -

With the Charter, Trudeau Snr wanted to restrict the power of the State. The Charter, like the US Bill of Rights, is written to protect an individual against the State. ===== Trudeau Snr favoured a federal state because such regimes made individuals free. -
You must be American or Prussian - certainly Protestant. No pancake/waffle? ===== Elsewhere in the world, people have a different first meal of the day. And as I say, the first meal is a tell of our cultural heritage. Some of us try different foods later in the day; few after waking.

Hollywood: Hays Code vs Woke/Political Correctness Code
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Arts and Culture
Disagree. The scripts of 1950s TV first tested the Hays Code. Pushed the envelope. ===== Nowadays, Trump can break the Code because of the internet. -
Doug Ford at least seems to have a direction. Carney? He's no Blair - let alone a Thatcher.

You lost me at Marxist dictator. Whatever his sons (or wife) are, Pierre Elliot Trudeau was no Marxist dictator. Heck, he brought Jack Horner across the floor. IMHO, Trudeau Snr was a federalist before being a democrat. But above all, Trudeau Snr thought about the individual in a State: https://historyofrights.ca/encyclopaedia/main-events/1937-padlock-act/ -
I liked the take-away - quote of Dion: "Canada does not work in theory. It only works in practice." Unlike Dion who works in theory, not in practice. I knew his father, Leon. Smart guy but like Claude Ryan.

Across Canada, nowadays, people want a federal politician who says: this is where we must go. =Trudeau Snr did this =Macdonald did this =Mulroney did this =heck, even Pearson did this. ====== -this guy Carney is not doing this

Obama goes to jail!?
August1991 replied to paxamericana's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Disagree. The Dems foolishly put Trump in court, and lost the 2024 election. ===== I reckon that if Trump puts Obama in court, the Repubs will lose the midterms. But what what do I know.... -

Disagree strongly. What strikes me about Trump 47 are the whistleblowers. -
Obama goes to jail!?

Democrats twice impeached Trump. The Democrats strip searched Bannon, put him in jail for several months. The Democrats woke Roger Stone. The Democrats forced Donald Trump to sit in a New York City court. ====== I reckon that we will see at least Brennan in orange. -
Mamdani, Poilievre and even Nixon don't quite understand: Bourassa returns to power. Like Trump

PET won his first election in June 1968 - a majoriity, no landslide like Diefenbaker- but a true Canadian majority. He lost in 1972, then won in 1974 - barely, because of Quebec.

Tamara disagreed with a government of the State. ====== The FLQ wanted to change the State. -

Pierre Trudeau created our Charter for precisely this purpose. -
Obama played the same nationalist card. Trudeau Snr didn't. ====== Trudeau Snr famously said: "I want to put Quebec in its place; and its place is in Canada." Obama should have said this.
