  1. Contrary to the never ending broken record North American capitalist doctrine, the reality is that the rich are dispensible. There is proably no better example of the truth to this statement than what is currently going on in Venezuela. It should come as no surprise then that the Bush Administration sees President Chavez as the evil enemy. Imagine the nerve of that South American Latin leader actually trying to improve the situation for the poor. How despicable!
  2. Divers Heymans, Hartley capture Canada's first medal Canada has just won its first medal at the Olympics, and am delighted for our two athletes personal achievement. Having said that I have been getting the feeling a lot of Canadians have been upset that Canada was not performing better. Who cares?
  3. We're recognizing global warming; will it be resolved? This is an excellent basic article which helps to explain global warming to the layperson. All indications are that we are heating up our planet and we need to take remedial measures. President Bush I believe has done us all a huge disservice and should be replaced for his position on global warming if nothing else. Canada's scientific community needs to ally itself more with some of the progressive Northern European communities, rather than the backward looking tired old outdated US policies that promote corporate profits over any societal cost.
  4. I think we need to focus on undergrads here as when one gets into post-grad work there are usually things like TA opportunities which skewer the results. How much approximately is undergraduate tuition these days in Canada? I thought a course was about $600 each times 5 equals $3000 per year. Maybe a bit more, no?
  5. Support for Chavez Unwavering in Slums of Venezuelan Capital Chavez's leadership must be having an impact on the rest of Latin America. Finally they have a leader who has successfully stood up to the right wing policies of the Bush administration. Do you think Chavez's victory will give Lula some courage?
  6. I wonder if corporations overall do more harm than good in our society and perhaps we might consider abolishing them. Maybe a good topic for another thread.
  7. I doubt very much that Israel would survive without their connections with the United States. Most Israelis realize this of course, and is the reason for such a substantive Jewish lobby directed at US politics.
  8. Hugo.......a few initial observations: 1 - one gets the idea that when you use the term environmentalist it is done in a derogatory sense. 2 - you seem to confuse the words scientist and environmentalist. 3 - I think you have it backwards. My impression is that the vast majority of the scientific community, apart from a few folks who are apologists for the fossil fuels industry, etc., are extremely concerned about global warming, and humans contribution to it. I doubt Dr Raven is the nutbar you make him out to be. 4 - my take is that you are a part of or have bot the Bush WHite House or pro industry position, who are famous for their attempts to bamboozle, hook, line, and sinker. 5 - not being an authority on the subject, I rely on the scientific community for my information. 6 - what if the scientists who suggest we humans are causing global warming are correct, but we ignore them?
  9. Venezuela's Chavez Survives Recall Referendum (Update2 Now that the will of the people has been expressed, the big question is, will President Bush and the US Administration respect democracy in Venezuela?
  10. U.S. can redeem itself after Venezuelans vote What, no exit polls in Venezuela?
  11. 'Boiling Point': Who's to Blame for Global Warming? So more media related problems here as well. Isn't it about time citizens starting demanding better from all involved, starting with a suggestion for politicians, industry, and scientitists to stop muddying the waters with gobblygook.
  12. Warning of global warming 'insanity' Hugo.....right on, you tell 'em.
  13. The pro-Israeli US lobby outspends the pro-Arab US lobby 140 times to 1. These figures speak volumes about US politics.
  14. James Lovelock: Nuclear power is the only green solution I think this scientist has a point about global warming being more serious and more urgent than terrorism. Can we safely ship nuclear waste into outer space - has this option ever been explored?
  15. Pressure Groups and US Middle East Policy I have often wondered why the US has constantly supported Israel over its Middle Eastern neighbours. But now with a review of these lobbying statistics on financial contributions, where Israeli interests outspend Arab intersts by sizeable margins, it is all beginning to make sense. Money talks.
  16. Turnout 'Massive' In Venezuela's Vote on Chavez This is huge folks. This is your classic right vs left battle, with the rich backed by President Bush while Chavez and his supporters are backed by China.
  17. Massive turnout as Venezuela goes to polls They have extended the voting time by an additional 4 hours to cope with the huge turnout. What should be a major cause for concern is that the losing side may not support the results. Their voting process seems quite high tech using a system of feeding fingerprints into a computerized vote counting process.
  18. Who cares? Pretty sad commentary on our Western press, n'est pas?

  20. Concerning propaganda, comparing Fox to Pravda is actually an excellent analogy. If you don't agree, please elaborate with specific details, or some facts, instead of overblown cold war era hype.
  21. .........or just apply for a student loan and work in the summer Sometimes when someone is from a poor family, it means that a 17 year old is the only breadwinner in the household. I know a lad in that predicament right now and I am encouraging him to go back to school at the end of the summer. It is not going to be easy for him to do. Wealthy, affluent, or non-poor people often make it all sound so easy. It isn't.
  22. Compared to what? Kitsilano, of course! Detroit on New Year's Day! I'll take my chances at Hastings and Main, thanks.
  23. Cartman....you beat me to it! What is this recent obsession with the debt Canadawide all about as well?
