  1. Don't you think it is time to get over the CanWest hype and start to address the issues that the average citizen cares about, rather than their agenda of these tax cuts for the very rich? As the Vanier Institute for the Family points out we have an abundance of things material in Canada. so lets drop this notion that we have to have poor people, that we can't have universal health care, tuition free education, guaranteed annual income, etc.
  2. The way the system works, the tax structure is rigged to retain the status quo. keep the rich, rich and the poor, poor. I am not saying our tax system is crooked. Unethical probably. Unfair absolutely. With powerful secretive lobbying through tax accountants and lawyers the rich stay rich. Well its time for the poor to get some breaks, and goodness knows if every person is worth over $300,000. there is no need to be poor in Canada, eh! I just think it is time for the rich to stop bellyaching about tax cuts, which only help the rich and exacerbate, or make things worse for the poor.
  3. According the Vanier Institute of the Family, which quite frankly, has a lot more credibility that any of these lobbyists disguised as so-called think tanks like the right wing Fraser Institute, each Canadian is worth more that $300,000. So, based on theses figures, after Jack Layton hits a home run on one of Paul Martin's pitches, and become prime minister, hopefully there will be a settling of accounts. Anyone worth more than $300,000. will be getting out their cheque books and writing a cheque to the Receiver General returning their surplus which they got either through stealing, murdering, or some tax loophole; and those who have less than $300,000. should expect to receive a cheque in the mail to even out the score. And perhaps Canada should institute a policy of settling of accounts every ten years to prevent anyone group of people from hogging the wealth, eh!
  4. Media can see 20% of B.C. raid information: judge Finally the police are beginning to shed some light on these raids which could well be devastating news for Campbell and Martin. How much corruption can a government withstand before it loses its credibility?
  5. Well, what percentage of the vote did the Liberals get anyway Mr Democratic Deficit? Seeing as they weren't worth the paper they were written on, and he had absolutely no intention of carrying them out, I can see many of PM Martin's election promises coming back to haunt him.
  6. I heard on the CBC that it was partly a financial issue, the Liberals have an adequet war chest and the other three are hurting. I think you are also right though that they don't expect a different result. I think it's pretty much a choice between the status quo and the Liberals gaining ground. I suppose our resident Quebecers will know much better than I, but it looks like it will be a cold day in hell before the Conservatives make a breakthrough in Quebec necessary to a majority for them. In fact I think it is considerably more likely that that the Liberals or the NDP as a junior coalition partner will take ground in the West at the Conservatives expense than the Conservatives taking ground in Quebec or even metropolitian Ontario. I don't think a majority is possible for the Conservatives at present but a Liberal one may be. So they don't want an election because they know that the only different result they are likely to get is a Liberal majority. Maybe it is this realization that has Harper in hiding and looking so shell shocked. Layton has to try to find a way to be seen as electable, something other than an opportunity for vote splitting by the centre (remember '88) and deal with the progressive threat of the the Greens and he doesn't want an election. Only Ducceppe has Zen, he has no expectations to meet, the beauty and tragedy of the Bloc I guess. I think you are absolutely right about that. I don't think it's constitutional though is it? Aren't matters of confidence a perogerative of the PM on the government side? Good final question there. My hunch is not necessarily. Confidence vote awaits Grit
  7. I think we are already in a trade war with the US. We always have been, and we always will be, until the US learns to respect us, and stops bullying us. Canada would be better off if the US want to screw us on softwood, then we will screw them on energy. Tit fir tat. Canada, rather than sit idly by while our industires are devastated by protectionist US policies, needs to kick ass and stand up to our southern neighbours. Of couse I am not suggesting that we completely stop trading with the US, but the more we diversify our trading partners the better off we will be.
  8. Harper rides trade winds Harper seems to think that the US will play fair in trade disputes, and all Canada has to do is kiss George Bush's ass - what kind of la la land is he living in? The US designs all these trade agreements to benefit themselves - they will never abide by the rules and the sooner Canada gets out of them the better.
  9. "Born again" is quite the phrase. This is the buzz word used to exonerate Christians from all their bad behaviour. Evil doer, sinner, or insane would be a more accurate description for these kooks. Was is it Johnny Cochrane who said: "If the glove fits...."?
  10. Draft-dodger memorial to be built in B.C. These courageous folks who fled the US rather than serve in an unjust war are going to be celebrated in BC. I doubt very much that a similar activity would take place in Alberta. People throw around the term "the West" in Canada, when actually the people in BC think very differently than those in Alberta. Living in BC I consider the West as BC, as opposed to the Prairies - Alberta, Sask. & Manitoba.
  11. Why don't you lose your paranoia? What makes you think communism is a dirty word? It is just another word in the dictionary like capitalism, fascism, democracy, etc. It is also obvious from your comments that you don't understand the meaning of the word. For what it's worth, I consider myself a middle class social democratic intellectual.
  12. Our Canadian Constitution guarantees minority language rights, which includes schooling for minorities. Read the whole thing!
  13. There is nothing of any substance that Canada currently prevents Quebeckers from doing presently, that they would be able to do if it were a separate country. All this is about is a power grab by the elite in Quebec, nothing more, and nothing less. Do you really believe Quebeckers would be better off outside Canada? Quebeckers need to stop whining all day long, year after year. Quebec has had two referedums, more than probably most other societies in the world would allow. It is now time to get on with your lives within the Canadian society, otherwise eventually the army will be brought in. Is that what you want? Last time the violence came from the separatists, the next time it will come from the federales. Allowing these referendums in the first place was a huge mistake as it has opened up a whole can of worms. It is time to put the genie back in the bottle so to speak.
  14. Bush braced for Kitty treatment Quite the President, isn't he? Personally involved in: Drugs Abortion Booze Draft-Dodger
  15. Bonanza for the opposition Life should get interesting in a few weeks, when the House is back in session.
  16. Black named in Canadian class action Shades of Bre-X?
  17. Trudeau and Chretien were not blind, they had a vision for Canada that more and more Canadians are beginning to appreciate. Time for Canada including Quebec to lose this small town thinking, eh!
  18. The new Conservative party has decided to have its first policy convention in Montreal, the 17th to the 19th of March, 2005. Strategically this is a brilliant move.
  19. So let the rich leave, all they are, are parasites on our society draining our resources. If it was so bad they would have left a long time ago. This is a tired old argument, and anyways who cares if they leave. good riddance. It is time to repair our tax structure and close off all these corporate scams. The rich change the rules all the time through their secretive corporate lobbying that most Canadians don't even realize is happpening. Spare us the crocodile tears. Do you think for one second if some business closes up where there is a demand for the product that another will not come forth to take its place? That's not the way capitalism works.
  20. These responses are the kind of stuff that Chomsky's alludes to in his writings. Do a thorough analysis of the Canadian tax system, see where all the loopholes for the rich are. It in not rocket science to figure out if these loopholes were closed we would have more than enough money for all the average person's needs in our society. But no, go ahead and believe all the drivel that the Fraser Institute, Canada's corporate media, the lawyers and tax accountants shovel out. Blame it all on some poor welfare recipient if it makes you feel like a good Christian. Just don't expect thinking people to buy into that nonsense.
  21. Really! The reality is it is election year in the US for starters. How many times have the US positions been found wanting on trade agreements and yet they continue to ignore the decisions and act as bullies? Come off it - it has absolutely nothing to do with Ottawa and everything to do with the US farming lobby. The sooner Canada begins to trade more with the rest of the world and less with the Americans the better off Canadians will be as Trudeau said a long time ago. Trudeau saw the US business community/government for what it is - a bunch of hoods!
  22. Article How sad, that this once great empire, is now so screwed up, that they can't even handle their own media telling them the truth.
  23. Border may stay closed: Harper And Harper aspires to be prime minister. That's it, blame Ottawa for US policies. What a loser!
  24. You are a trolling wing nut. Brilliant deductions going on here - anyone who doesn't toe the right wing corporate agenda, in other words anyone who disagrees, gets labelled a troll. This is so typical of the right wing lack of substance arguments, when you can't win an argument, try and smear your opponents.
