It appears that the topic has wandered again. Back to topic. What this kid did was simply unacceptable. You could spend hours trying to justify it but in the end it is what it is and no amount of rationalization will change that. The problem as I see it is with the punishment. as has been said already its no more than a slap on the wrist and sends entirely the wrong message to both players and fans. Sometimes I wonder if Hockey will go the way Soccer did. You know, riots and deaths, open warfare between fans of different teams. A guy in Calgary recently got the crap kicked out of him because he was walking down the street wearing an Oilers shirt. Then we have the disgracefull displays by fans when other countries anthems are played. It could be said these are isolated incidents, but when I think back it seams that these kinds of incidents were non existent in past years.

When buddy dropped his girls off in the field to freeze to death it was just made up crap. When that woman pushed the 17 year old kid in front of the train in Calgary over a 10 dollar drug debt it was crap, not really what happened. When my friends niece was assaulted and hospitalized by 3 Native youths it was crap? When the guy was beaten to death by about 10 0r 12 Natives in the local bar it was crap? When I see them pushing shopping carts full of booze out of the local liquor store on cheque day its crap? These are just a few examples off the top of my head. Sure, you're going to get some negative views applied to one and all, thats human nature and we all do it, yourself included. That however is no reason to deny the truth and paint them all as saintly ones who can do no wrong. The fact is that such a view is very far from the truth. As I've mentioned before I'm very equal opportunity, a bum is a bum is a bum. When I look upon drunken white guys with contempt why would I give a pass to Natives just because they are Native? I agree there is propaganda applied by both sides, that includes Natives, not just mainstream Canada. Where I disagree is your estimate, I highly doubt that 98.9% as you state, is crap.

The real shame is actually those who know nothing of others but feel free to judge those people. It always seems to come down to this. It doesn't matter how reasonable Canadians want to be, the Native agenda is always one of more and then some more. Sure we'll keep some. Maybe we'll let them keep a little bit of what has been built and developed by us, not them. After all what of significance has been financed developed and built by them, other than a wood hut that is? Would they also want to keep health care, educational systems and social systems? If they did attempt to take everything where do they think the aforementioned would come from? Them?

In the same light as your post I would ask how some Native women could trust living with a Native man given the undeniable rate of domestic violence amongst Native communities. For someone who dislikes sweeping generalizations you certainly do have a penchant for indulging in them.

Now this would appear to be an example of what I was talking about in reference to our two new hires. On the one hand we have the guy who I think will work out well. He's on time (so far) puts in a good days work, is freindly and has a real desire to earn his Journeyman papers and build a life. On the other hand we have the guy who doesn't show up for work on the first two days and uses a birthday party as an excuse. From the vapid drivel posted about great fathers I would say the individual who made them would fall into the second of those two examples. If this individual wishes respect be shown to them then I suggest they try earning it rather than petulantly demanding it. Or could it be that the concept of being self sufficient is just far too horrendous for this peurile petulant individual to contemplate.

Bullshit. Show me one average Canadian who believes this is acceptable. Just another unfounded statement with no substance. When you mention "in some circles" I take it you are talking about Natives. You must be since they have the highest rate of domestic violence in the country. Around here the big tough Rednecks are too busy putting in 12 and 14 hour days to beat anyone up. Dont go onto the reserves alone around here though. Theres a damn good chance you wont be leaving them if you do. I have seen numerous cases around here of groups of Natives assaulting young women though. This is one of the parts of your posts that really amuses me. You talk about above the law while conveniently forgeting all the Natives who scorn the law and openly state that it does not apply to them. I agree with what you say, but with a few caveats. I say settle the claims in an equitable manner. In other words don't just say "okay, heres everything you want", settle them in a manner acceptable to the majority. Sure, give them self government, let them be separate nations with all that entails. In other words, take over their own lives and draw the perpetually extended hand back and start providing for themselves. Fill those hands with tools rather than government cheques. With the ability to provide for themselves as a nation the level of self esteme might also grow solving many of the roots of the present situation. Put an end to this perpetual strife and the demands for more that go with it. If the concept of separate nations is desired then the responsibilities that accompany such should be accepted and the welfare attitude dropped in favour of one that encourages self sufficiency. The upside is that we wouldn't be dishing out 12 billion or so a year in perpetuity. At least thats the ideal situation. I think we all realize that in reality the demands wouldn't cease and would only be renewed as time progressed. As an aside for Rue. You have stated many times that a Native will not refer to themselves as Indians. Sorry Rue but on this one you are flat out wrong, as wrong as can be. Plenty of them use the word Indian. Just last night my young friend visited me with some of his friends. They like to have a sounding board for their complaints about their fellow Natives. Every one of the four used the name Indian repeatedly in reference to their peers. As I've said before. Because one has an idealized view of Native society does not impart legitimacy to that view, merely wishfull thinking. The good news is that we just hired two more young Native guys and I think that one of them will work out just fine. The other I don't think will. It's not a good sign when you don't show up for work on your first two days and then as an excuse offer up the fact that you were at a birthday party and got drunk for two days. Still, if we get one out of two then thats something positive.

Please don't go holding China up as a shining beacon of the way forward, they are anything but that. Sure its working for them right now, but at what cost. People tend to forget the totalitarian nature of China. People forget the Human Rights abuses, the lack of concern for worker safety and their abysmal record for such. If China is a model of Capitalism then I'll gladly skip it. For me the prospect of coming home from work alive every day far outweighs any perceived or imagined benefits to the kind of society China has. Anyone up for running over a few students with a tank? Actually I disagree. The estimate of 40,000 is generally accepted by most, however I did ask if you could show something to lend veracity to your claim regarding S.A. and you haven't provided anything. Once more it would appear that you are just claiming something yet showing nothing to lend legitimacy to your claim. As I said earlier, I would like to see something, anything, that would lend credence to your claim. This I believe would be very interesting and offer much food for thought. Perhaps even give enough weight to the subject to cause a major shift in belief relating to the origin of modern man. Well I just read the NG article, it was quite interesting. It still doesn't lend any credence to the claims about SA though. In fact it simply reinforces the 40,000 year theory for Europe. As to when modern humans first inhabited Europe, well I really don't see what bearing that has on the claim of 50,000 years for SA.
