I find this conversation a bit pointless, since you admit readily enough that multilateralism is a farce that achieves nothing, but somehow attach moral weight to the notion that "concensus" and "multilateralism" are good in and of themselves. The object in Iraq was to oust Saddam. It took two weeks to "unilaterally" achieve that (with the help of 26 other unilateral countries), and 10 years for "multilateralism" to achieve precisely nothing. Bush had the notion that an island of democracy in the middle east would have far-reaching implications. He was right, but he underestimated the degree to which the surrounding authoritarian regimes would attempt to thwart him, and the degree to which his allies would betray him. Not to mention the useful fools in the west who trot about voicing the mantra that the "surge is not working," even though all military reports suggest exactly the opposite. The US is at this point still in Iraq for largely altruistic reasons, because if they left it would be anarchy. My solution would be what it has always been: use draconian occupation measures, deadlines for the Iraqi government of the sort given the west German government in 1946, attacks on Syrian border bridges, quite possibly larger scale attacks on Iranian military installations, and a credible threat urging other gulf states to stay the hell out of the conflict. When the invasion went forward, the regional states kept a very low profile in the face of US resolve. Because that resolve is crumbling, the US is seen again as a paper tiger. Once again the press and the left have ensured that the US snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I suggest you do some reading on what exactly is going on with these "meek" followers of the "religion of Peace." I'm talking about what the alleged "moderates" are up to. They are absolute masters at using our own freedoms against us. The latest, just to give you an example, is the thoroughly dishonest tactic by Cair to smear one of its high profile opponents...called him a "racist," and then citing a comment by some commenter on his blog in such a way as to suggest that he said it. This is not something that stands out in Cair's tactics...it's commonplace. All these "non-issues" add up, and they are adding up rapidly these days.

Citing Chapman and the odd abortion clinic yahoo and trying to juxtapose them against the hundreds and sometimes thousands of killings in the name of Islam, per month, does nothing but show the complete bancruptcy of your case. Islam has been using bully tactics for a decade now in the west...the bad cop "terrorists" blow up something, and the good cop "moderates" come out of the woodwork vaguely "condemning" the action and then adding a "solution" which happens to accord with the exact aims of the terrorists eg: "get out of Iraq," or "nuke Israel" or some such. What is particularly amusing is when they claim that terrorism "has nothing to do with Islam," and then claim that such and such a policy that Muslims don't like is to blame for it. People are finally starting to twig on to the tactic Kuzzad...everyone but useful fools.

Sadly the real world, if by that you mean the world the UN "multilateralists" lay about in, sits around on its arse pushing papers and being "concerned" and "regretful," while other parts of the real world keep doing whatever the hell it wants to do. You may not have noticed, but the "unilateralists" achieved in 2 weeks in Iraq what the "multilateralists" would still be unsuccessfully doing today. The "multilateralists" started screwing up in 1931 and have yet to achieve a single concrete victory or stop a single war. The odd time they do get their crap together enough to do something, their ROE are so strict that they have to sit by and watch events like Rwanda, Somalia and Sudan take place without doing a damned thing about it. So if you think it's sophisticated to do nothing while talking about how nice it would be if we all joined hands and lived in lalaland instead of actually doing something, then you have an interesting take on what the "real world" entails.

Without a pre-political loyalty, emotional ties or even a pragmatic interest in supporting nation states, the democratic system becomes a vehicle for distributing favors to your friends at home and abroad, for fleecing the voters while in power and hopefully ensuring a lucrative international career along the way. The "middle class" is so-called because it denotes a middle layer between two extremes - not because it denotes a house, 2.2 children and a couple of cars. Middle class in India is completely different from middle class in the west. Middle class in India means one doesn't live in a mud hut with a tin roof in a slum. Middle class means one may be able to afford a honda scooter or even an Ambassador car, if one is upper middle class...a rattletrap "national" car made from old Bentley molds discarded sometime around independence. That's one reason the "Asian" stock market tanked in the 90s...the so-called "rise of the middle class" in India turned out to be not quite what investors had in mind in terms of what that meant in relative buying power. And Momo's figures are distilled from thin air, as he tacitly admits, even if they DID have the meaning he thinks they had. India is a third world nation, and until such time as its society changes, it will remain that way. As always, an intelligent post. A couple of clarifications first. What I was touching on is classic deterence theory. It originated in the same realist paradigm Henry Kissinger is so fond of, to be sure...specifically the USSBS...but beyond that they have no real connection. You're right, deterence theory evolved out of the armed stasis of the cold war and between rational state actors, and when I'm talking about it, I'm talking about Iran...a state actor. I believe that Iran, in spite of it's f**ked up leadership, still knows the game and how deterence theory works. I have my doubts that they understand its limits because of the soft underbelly the west has shown it, and that's cause enough for concern, but I have no doubt Iran knows the benefits of having a nuclear umbrella. You are quite right...terrorists - and I distinguish here between Iran and terrorists - are a wild card, and we know they can trigger massive backlash...Afghanistan is proof enough of that. Triggering nuclear backlash from Israel or the west is quite another thing, however, several boundings up the escalation ladder even from full scale invasion. No one in the west wants to open the nuclear Pandora's box, and that in and of itself is the power of possessing a nuke. And I'm not simply making the claim that all is well and good because Iran is not likely to use the bomb pre-emptively. In fact, my real concern is that Iran will overestimate the deterrent value of the bomb and embark on adventurism in a way the Soviets never would have. Israel will only be pushed so far, and unlike a significant segment of the population in the US and Canada, it has the national backbone to fight back hard.

I lived in India for seven years and have been back since. India is a third world country. There is a small educated strata of what are referred to as the 'middle class' (a term that does not describe, either proportionately or economically, what we would refer to as middle class in the west), mostly composed of the Brahmin and Warrior caste, but the vast majority of society is dirt poor. You have absolutely no idea how utterly third world India is, so try to avoid lecturing me on how thrillingly modern India is. And it is not the presence of machines that dictates a society's morays in any event; economic determinism went out the door with the fall of the USSR.
