  1. An Arab company in Singapore provided the bulk of Saddam's chemical weapons presursors. The Kim Al-Khaleej firm. They provided 4500 tons of precursor for VX which was never found. Granted, Saddam used some up on Iranians and Kurds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_sup...e_Iran-Iraq_war The US did provide Saddam some precursors...but that wasn't their intended use (chemical weapons)...they were intended for insecticide and herbicide production. --------------------------------------------- The infidels are committing suicide by the hundreds on the gates of Baghdad... Be assured, Baghdad is safe, protected. Iraqis are heroes. ---Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf
  2. Nah...just smug. Did you see that episode of South Park? George Clooney's Acadamy Awards speech... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smug_Alert! ------------------------------------- I'm certainly the last person to give advice on, well, anything. ---George Clooney
  3. Many units in WW1 were raised locally...especially in the British New Army. 'Pal' batalions, they were called. One well placed shell could wipe out all the men from a given town. Thus the American policy...which most of the world adopted if possible...of making sure each unit was a mix of everyone from everywhere in the US. Certain limitations on family members serving together also came into effect with "The Sullivans" incident. That was where five brothers all serving on the light crusier USS Juneau died in one of the sea battles off Guadalcanal in 1942. I'm not sure if the Sullivan regulations are enforced to this day. They did make a wartime movie about them, though: The Fighting Sullivans. --------------------------------------- The idea that a war can be won by standing on the defensive and waiting for the enemy to attack is a dangerous fallacy, which owes its inception to the desire to evade the price of victory. ---General Sir Douglas Haig
  4. Indeed. This is beyond horrible news. Hot night in that town. Afghanistan...kind of like playing 'Snakes and Ladders'. --------------------------------------- My brain hurts! ---Monty Python's Flying Circus
  5. Over 1200 escaped...including 350 known Taliban including commanders/officers. That ain't too good... Canadian forces are partly responsible for security in the area...Leopard 1 tanks were rushed in help cordon off the area. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/14/world/asia/14kandahar.html ------------------------------ Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. ---Muhammad Ali
  6. That was a huge problem in one of the northern communities my wife lived in. Rankin Inlet. Drops of gasoline actually condense in your brain...kidneys...liver...etc. The method prefered was to soak a matress in gasoline and then lay on it. ----------------------------------------------- Looks like I picked a bad day to stop sniffing glue. ---Lloyd Bridges: Airplane
  7. So, in your opinion, who did 9-11? ------------------------ It is more profitable for your congressman to support the tobacco industry than your life. ---Jackie Mason
  8. You know...I think I actually agree with much of your thoughts on this one...lol. I think that assimilation is more important in smaller towns and cities. It's really quite a shock in a town of 10,000 say, to all of a sudden become the home for thousands of folks from every country on the globe with little interest in actually fitting into the local culture. I think people living in the major centres are less affected by this culture shock are are quicker to pass it off as unimportant. As well, in smaller communities, there may or may not be a lot of work...so unemployed immigrants on welfare are very visible...it can make the average Joe Canucklehead going to work every morning go WTF?? Why am I working? Everyone else is just hanging around drinking brews! But, hey...it's all about eating at new, exotic restaurants...right? ---------------------------------------- Adaptability is not imitation. It means power of resistance and assimilation. ---Mahatma Gandhi
  9. I agree. It is dangerous ground that could just as easily be used as a weapon against their goals. One envokes Storm Troopers as bodyguards at their own peril...one might say. Those that think all Canadians...or any educated population...are so easily led around by their noses really just hold said population in contempt. All it says is that they think they're smarter and wiser than you and the guy next to you, as well. Mr Burns would simply release the hounds. I agree both sides feed off of one another. However, I think fellows like Steyn are a response rather than a cause. We wouldn't listen to him at all if certain events involving terrorists waving the Koran didn't occur. Seriously...in 1990...what did you think the most pressing problem on the planet was? Probably not Islamic terrorism. Do you remember the few weeks before 9-11? Can you recall what the big news was? My wife and I both remember...there was a large string of shark attacks around the planet (dumb luck)...so many attacks that new-hounds were musing that there might be a shark-conspiracy. Odd what one remembers... To be fair to Mr Steyn, that's the same thing the 3 Muslim students said re: wanting a clash of civilizations. Steyn replied he'd rather be on his porch looking at the mountains. Do you recall that? Not sure what part it is in. Hard to say what his real motives are, but we can both agree that one of them is selling books. As I mentioned earlier...or elsewhere, I forget...Pat Codell is in a similar vein while not selling books. It's up to you to judge if the message is different. I'm not sure what you're getting at here. The US military is certainly multi-faith...much like the country. Soldiers of every colour and creed, from every state of the Union, all serving in the same regiment/ship/squadron/etc. First...like many in the West...I'm non-religious and god or gods don't enter into the daily equation of life. Second, this isn't the 8th century...and if it was, chances are Muslims would have been "occupying" my town. However, I agree there's a Christian element that has a bit too much influence in America at the moment...but come November, that'll likely change even if McCain gets in. ------------------------------------------------------ Avoiding offense means that we don't accept each other as equals. ---Ayaan Hirsi Ali
  10. Seems like a Grand Slam-like weapon...penetrate...explode...bye, bye. Only...lol...'only'...22,000 lbs, though. ---------------------------------- Who's on first? ---Abbott & Costello
  11. Yup mentioned that...crew nearly killed. Apparently it was one of the few times that thermal radiation actually caused severe damage to the aircraft. M.Dancer mentioned actual weight...several thermonuclear weapons of the 50s and 60s did weigh more. What's der problem...lol? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_17_nuclear_bomb http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_24_nuclear_bomb If you want me to say it ain't so...I'll try...lol. ------------------------------------ Is that all there is? Is that all there is? If that's all there is my friend, Let's keep dancing...
  12. You know nothing. ----------------- Like a sad hallucination, When I opened up my eyes, The train had passed the station, And you were trapped inside... Yet I never wonder where you went, I only wonder why, I wonder why... ---Concrete Blonde
  13. I am refering to weight...as well as explosive power. The Tsar Bomb weighed in at a hefty 27 tons!! The Tu-95 is about the size of 3 Lancasters. Much like the modified bomb bays that carried the Tall Boys and Grand Slams, the Tsar Bomb hung under the turbo-jet bomber more or less exposed. YouTube has a few good vids on it. As mentioned, early thermonuclear weapons (Hydrogen Bombs) weighed a lot. The first hydrogen bomb, Ivy Mike, was so large there was no way to weaponize it. ---------------------------------------------- Bombs do not choose. They will hit everything. ---Nikita Khrushchev
  14. Nah...several thermonuclear weapons of the 50s and early 60s had the Tall Boy and Grand Slam beat. The so-called Tsar-Bomb of the Soviets took all the horse-power an Tu-95 had to muster just to get it into the air and on target...the crew were nearly killed trying to escape the 57 megatonne blast. ------------------------------------------------------ If you kill enough of them, they stop fighting. ---General Curtis Lemay
  15. Here's the article. ------------------------- In the days after 9/11, we heard innumerable reprises of the lazy leftist trope 'poverty breeds terrorism.' But the Arab world is wealthy. It suffers, as David Pryce-Jones has said, from intellectual poverty. ---Mark Steyn
  16. I never miss a chance to talk shop with folks who were actually there. There's another thread re: Mr Carter's epiphany about Israel's nuclear capabilities. -------------------------------------- Nice and easy does it everytime. ---Frank Sinatra
  17. So censorship, then? ----------------------------------- The cloud of smug over South Park develops, and begins to combine with that of San Francisco. McFriendly then reveals that the cloud of smug from George Clooney's 78th Academy Awards acceptance speech — which claimed that Hollywood was "ahead of the curve" on social issues — will soon drift into the center of the "super cell" and create "the perfect storm of self-satisfaction"... ---South Park: Smug Alert!
  18. You are correct, sir! The Nabob was one of the superb Bogue class CVEs. She saw a lot of action and even survived a torpedo hit. -------------------------- Happiness is your dentist telling you it won't hurt and then having him catch his hand in the drill. ---Johnny Carson
  19. lol...good one. ------------------------ Lisa: Bart looks really hurt, Nelson. Nelson: I said: "Ha! Ha!" ---The Simpsons
  20. Nobody can name Canada's first aircraft carrier? Do we have to get an American to answer this one??? ------------------------------------------ One bourbon, one scotch and one beer. ---George Thorogood
  21. Fair enough re: Spencer. While I find some of his stuff is rather compelling, it is presented in such a way that one feels he/she should be choosing sides. This is why I prefer 'hacks' like Pat Condell when it comes to commentary on 'radical' Islam. He isn't selling a book. Curious. Did you watch Steyn and the three Muslim law students video listed at the start of this thread? Personally, I think the three are grasping at straws re: Steyn = Hate Speech. Do you really think that's the mission in Iraq? Conversion to Christianity? Or are you just pulling my leg? ------------------------------------------------------ If Steyn is even remotely right in his predictions, two bad things will happen. First, he will become even more insufferable than he is now... ---David McKie, "The Guardian"
  22. The HMCS Bonaventure and the HMCS Magnificent were hardly escort carriers. They were CVLs that were upgraded to fleet carrier (CV) status by addition of an angled deck plus catapult, arresting gear, et al. They were comparable to ships like the the Essex class conversions post WW2. Canada did have two escort carriers, though...and one of them is Canada's first carrier. I was thinking more along the lines of the logistics of the very long flight. I'll also point out that you are in a long line-up of folks who claim Israel can't pull something off as it would be 'impossible'. -------------------------------------- I never trust a fighting man who doesnt smoke or drink. ---Adm William "Bull" Halsey
  23. --------------------------------- Sure, i'm hung over and burnt out, but thats what a good dad is all about. ---Ricky: Trailer Park Boys
  24. You're generalizing the other way. What does poverty have to do with Islam and terrorism? ---------------------------------------- If you want to have an exclusive surgery with me, Dr. Nick Riviera, dial 1-800-DOCTORB. Note the extra B is for BARGAIN. ---Dr Nick Riviera
