Truth and Reconciliation... Legitimacy
Accountability Now replied to Scott Mayers's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Nope. They still exist just the same as every other Canadian. And no it certainly is not illegal as long as they decide. You really don't know how the law works do you? -

Nope. They can be what ever they want. Irish, Chinese, Russians, Polish, Japanese, Pakastani and many many many more can and do exist as their own people. The difference here is that the Aboriginal people need us to make it ok for it to be valid. That is sad. They should be able to know what they are and not have to prove it. Of course, this isn't about proving it...its about leveraging it for funding. -

How many pennies in total would I lose from Duffy or any other senate debacle? How much did I lose when Redford used government funds for private use? Both of those examples involved peanuts but it caused a huge onset of rage because it was tax payer money. So if your only argument is that I shouldn't care because it will cost me pennies, then I would be inclined to say you don't have an argument at all. With all this said, I'm waiting to see what the results of the SCC ruling on the Mets. I recently found out that I am eligible for Metis status and if the ruling goes through then I'll have the same rights as status Indians in the reserve. How's that work especially since I'm at best 2% native???? That's our courts!!!! -

They already did. Didn't you see the videos of the rent a mob in Toronto? I would however like an example of a revolution that coalesced around indigenous aspirations. I think the opposite will happen. Right now aboriginals aren't even on the average Canadisns radar. The more legal battles and more attention they bring by reaching for more will only make the ROC realize enough is enough. Especially considering our immigration levels of people who couldn't care less about agreements made by some British dudes -

As always you pick out one thing I said and focus on that instead of the point of this whole thing. As long as we are separate there will always be struggles with the US versus THEM mentality. As much as people think natives win with tax breaks or other rights, they lose in so many other ways which is why we see reserves in the conditions they are -

Not at all. As per my previous post I stated to jacee, they should have the same rights as any other Canadaian including the right to exist. No more, no less. She is just trying to play with words because she's desperate to make a point that doesn't exist -

I think the Indian act should go as should the treaties. But this has been tried and rejected by the natives as such there isn't much we can do about it but continue to spin our wheels and waste money in bureaucratic bullshit -

In that definition then yes....I do. They should be part of the Canadian people. Not separate -

Aboriginal people should exist the same as Irish, Pakistani, Russian, Chinese or any other Canadian. The question of should they exist is pure and utter stupidity. Should they have special rights? That is really up to them however I stand by my belief that these special rights are screwing them over and continues to hold them back. If they truly want to move forward, they need to come up with a different way that does not plot us versus them. -

It's called the reality list. Natives didn't sign treaties to share the land...if they did then why are they secluded to some of the worst areas out there. You're constant delusional point of view is really quite scary. Instead of going to war and taking the land by force, the Brits thought they could assimilate them and yes with less than desirable tactics at times. Having said that the only other reality is what happened to the natives south of the border. Can you grasp what happend down there and not see the reality of what would have happened here if the treaties weren't signed? -

Most people who hate the US have never been out of Canada I have relatives with MS, Alzheimer's, and autism. To think this discovery could have an impact on all three is amazing. -

No. We were going to live in this land regardless of the treaties. If it wasn't us it was the Americans. The treaties allowed the Aboriginals to live...period. -

I don't really care where they do the research if they are able to find the causes of these diseases. -

Did you intentionally leave out the most interesting part from that article? "Not all former students support the TRCs position, and the legal case has created unusual alliances. Like the TRC, the Canadian government is seeking to preserve the documents, while Catholic churches and the Assembly of First Nations have expressed concerns about their potential release." The Canadian government wants these documents and the AFN doesn't???? Why would that be? Oh wait...the article suggests further reasoning: "Former Assembly of First Nations leader Phil Fontaine told the Ontario court that stories of aboriginal-on-aboriginal abuse at the schools could prove damaging to First Nation communities." -

Yes....I read your posts on Charles and other boarding schools and agree that they used similar tactics to try and change them. In many ways I would say they are using forced assimilation as well. Perhaps not to the level it was used against the natives but still forced nonetheless -

They didn't have to....the aboriginals ceded and surrendered the land. Again...if you read the treaties you'd know this. They had a right to use the land but it was no longer theirs -

For those kids however I would say it was forced assimilation -

Read it already. Do have the people at the UN and they still havent called this genocide. Keep trying.... -

A declaration that you continue to misinterpret. No one at the UN, past or present, has actually said this was genocide -

Then don't bring up the bloody treaties if you have no intent of talking about them or backing up your bogus claims. -

Forced assimilation is forced assimilation. Just like apples are apples and not oranges. Get it? -

You said we broke the treaties.....STEP UP and support your claim or retract it. You have been asked to provide evidence that Canada broke the treaties. -

Assimilating is getting rid of them. That was the intent with both. Is that too complex for you?
