  1. Aye, with self driving buses and driverless Uber vehicles, I won't need to own them anymore. I wonder if computer controlled vehicles will refuse to drive people that still use WInXP or type with one finger?
  2. Conservative supporters reject Harper government over veterans’ treatment. (http://www.veteransagainstconservatives.com/updates) 65% of Conservative voters are dissatisfied with Harper's treatment of veterans, with 33% saying it is one reason to vote against the Conservatives this time around.

Actually, Mulcair is far more centrist than past NDP leaders. He's talking about balanced budgets and growth. He's also polling first in terms of leadership with JT a close second and Steve-o dipping to third.

But with 1/3 of past Con supporters thinking of not supporting Harper based on his treatment of vets alone, things aren't looking good. Still, I expect the CPC will use their war chest to blast some pro-vet sounding ads for a month. You can never count that corrupt SOB and his politics of fear out.

I think that the Liberals are the once that started this mess with regards to vets, the conservatives made it worse and didn't change a thing for the better. To me this election is about things other than vets because the promises of the Liberals does not make me feel better due to their track record, Same goes for the Conservatives and I have a feeling that the NDP really really dislikes the military as a whole...

  3. Your post is bang on about the presence and prevalence of guns enhancing the death toll. However, to this point above I would also add that social and financial equality has declined since the 1950's. There are more poor, household incomes are flat, but it now takes two people (on average) to earn what one did 50 years ago. More people below the poverty line, with few options and little hope leads to crime and anger and violence. Introduce guns into angry situations and we have a plethora of deaths. Removing guns would instantly help the death toll, reducing poverty and wealth inequality would also help crime rates, education rates, the economy, life expectancy, health care costs, etc. The US is essentially an illustration of the conservative race to the bottom, the privatization of profits but socialization of costs, coupled with deadly weapons.
  4. My first impulse was to say...just find a non-homophobic employee to drive that bus, but it does raise an interesting question. Should drivers be able to refuse to pilot buses containing any advertising they disagree with? For example would it be acceptable for me to boycott a bus containing a Christian message or an 'ethical oil' ad? Probably not. I don't think advertising, on buses, cabs, billboards or benches for causes I disagree with infringe on my personal rights. Other religions, beliefs and view points that I find false, really do exist; yet, ads for those topics don't prevent me from holding opposing beliefs. In short, the guy should have to drive the bus but he should feel free to avoid having sex with or marrying other men. Ironic that this ad exists considering that our current government sells billions worth of arms to terrorist supporters and is almost completely out of the peacekeeping game..
  5. “Stalin had small balls compared to this guy. Harper is probably the most dangerous human being ever elevated to power in Canada. How the population has acquiesced in following this son of a bitch, and to let him take over their lives, I’ll never know. You have to create warrior nations, they are not born. They have to be made. It is the preliminary step of a tyrant. And this son of a bitch incited Canada into becoming a warrior nation.” - WWII Vet, Farley Mowat

If you support a government and PM that abuses power, diminishes our democracy and has proven to be corrupt then you are condoning those acts. The CPC can be fixed with better leadership, but that can't happen until you stop supporting the corrupt one.

"I bet 'our Steve' would love the fact that Mowat said he had balls like Stalin. " Mowat is senile, has been for a decade+. Only a retard could compare Harper with a man conservatively estimated to have murdered several million people. But do carry on, I know you cannot help yourself.

  6. MPs are supposed to be responsible for their constituents now, but it's not the case. A change in the electoral system like I described earlier could make representatives more accountable to voters, but is there a way to legally protect MPs from the PM of their party? Current CPC MPs don't bother to challenge Harper's script for them because of the bullying it leads to. What could be done give MPs the freedom to put their constituents ahead of the party?
  7. CPC MP Bill Casey was squashed by Harper for not selling out his Nova Scotia riding. Harper not only kicked Casey out of the party but then attacked towns within the riding for supporting Bill. I don't want a petty, vindictive, sociopath as my PM anymore.

As much fun as it has been to have a government of one...it's time to push for better, accountable, open, evidence based leadership.

  8. Prior to Stephen Harper's rule, parties actually worked together in committee to improve legislation. MPs were free to voice their thoughts, concerns and ideas within their committee. Yet, despite the fact that PM Harper isn't on the various committees he was able to eliminate the ability of CPC MPs to think and speak freely in committee meetings. The PMO assigns CPC MPs their positions and talking points during pre-committee meetings and failure to execute one's orders is met with scorn and the threat of permanent backbench status and even expulsion from the party. Thus, CPC MPs simply follow instructions to avoid the wrath of the PM and his office. How would your plan to basically separate the PM and MPs into two different namespaces (Executive, Legislative) prevent a guy like Harper from controlling his MPs behind the scenes, as he currently does during committee meetings?
  9. Even bigger than the case of whether or not paying off some expenses for a senator was a mistake, is that the Prime Minister lied about the entire affair. Yet again, the man who originally got his title by promising to be open, transparent and accountable has been caught lying to the public and parliament. Why was it again, that parliament fell last time? Oh yeah, the PM withheld information and lied to parliament. What happened during the followup election? Oh yeah, the CPC not only broke spending laws but also engaged in a voter suppression campaign that hit 200+ ridings. Hey cons, why not get rid of the embarrassment leading your party and groom the next one who can rebuild a credible, honourable right of centre option?
  10. Michael Chong, is a good man and could have been a great political figure if not hampered by a vindictive, dictatorial PM. It was nice to see Chong sacrifice a cabinet post, money, perks, limo service, etc. to preserve his integrity in the face of Harper the bully. Anyway, I would prefer to see Canadians given two votes. One for the governing party and one for their local representative. Each winning local rep gets a seat, parliament is adjusted with additional MPs to match the popular vote and the leader of the party with the greatest share of the popular vote becomes PM. Every vote counts, regardless of what your neighbours think, you can support a good local rep, even if you despise their party (eg. Mike Chong) and you can vote directly for a desired governing party or PM. Win, win, win. Plus I like the idea that the PM isn't greater than the House of Commons.

You pick n choose what so-called authoritarian reflexes you abhor. Obama can "deem" congress in recess so that he can make a recess appointment to the courts. And you call him the greatest president ever! The Supreme Court had to step in and tell him no. But he's your best president ever! Pick n choose buddy. Pick n choose. #Hypocrite

More deflection. We can't vote for Obama here, at least try to read some Canadian right wing propaganda. Ezra seems like your kind of nonsense..try The Rebel. Harper punished an entire riding because it supported a man for being right. Just like the vindictive, sociopath did to Linda Keen (Nuclear Safety), Munir Sheikh (Stats Can).

As he pointed out, he needs to see the full extent of the wreckage Harper has left behind before committing to a firm plan. And that only makes sense.

  13. If press wants to ask Harper a question they have to give his party $78,000. What was that about open and transparent? It would be nice to have a PM capable of answering questions. http://www.vice.com/en_ca/read/if-we-want-to-ask-stephen-harper-questions-we-have-to-give-his-party-78000

Hardly worth the cost when he only will take 5 questions, and then gives the same old tired, scripted answers anyway. It is a bit of fun watching him squirm over Duffy though.

  14. Other than the fact that our electoral system doesn't produce the parliament Canadians vote for.
  15. Well, it is a fairly new movement here and a majority did support it in BC. I'm hopeful that since we have growing factions on both the left and right demanding PR that it will happen sooner than later. Why do you think that accurately representing how people vote in parliament could be dangerous?
  16. What an odd comment. Do you really think poochy's premise which hinges on the idea that Canada is better than other places hence we should not improve, deserves a more detailed response? I think that ridiculous and lazy idea was adequately handled when I said "government should be accountable to the people, there are better systems than FPTP at achieving that." Let's apply Poochy's ridiculous logic to other topics and see how it sounds. Why should we want cleaner air? Canadians breather cleaner air than most of the world's population. Why should we want better vaccines and medications? Canadians live longer than most of the world's population. Why should we want lower crime rates, higher incomes, improved quality of life, etc. etc. Shouldn't we always strive to improve? The point of the story in the OP is that there is a growing faction of conservatives fed up with the corruption and bad government of Stephen Harper. They want something better and are calling for PR to help their small-c conservative values find representation. Thing is PR helps all voters achieve fair and equal representation.
  17. I was going to say nice strawman, but it was quite pathetic actually. Government should be accountable to the people, there are better systems than FPTP at achieving that.
  18. Tim..Duggar confessed and apologized. What are you arguing this?
  19. Great but...Duggar still admitted to cheating when he was outed. That would be an unlikely move for a guy that didn't actually use Ashley Madison to cheat and makes his living by duping rubes into attacking gay rights for Jesus.
  20. The zip code trick usually allows you to use a Canadian Credit card to make US based purchases. I use it to pay for HULU and gas at US pumps. Take the 3 numbers from your postal code, add two zeros and check here (cities by zip code) to see if it's valid. If not add 01, try again and repeat until a valid code is found. This code passes address verification and still shows up as a US address.
  21. Not at all, without the chance of winning majority status parties do not simply oppose simply to oppose. Cooperation means death now, but the will of voters becomes more important under PR. Government beholden to the people is a good thing; 'our benign dictatorship' is not. Fewer bills are bundled together, especially if much needed legislation preventing omnibus bills, like JT has proposed is in place. Cons, Libs and Greens agree on several economic and law issues. Libs, Dips and Greens agree on most environmental issues. Popular ideas pass easily, contentious ones do not and may requiring haggling or dealing. A bill haggled over and amended to obtain majority support is likely better legislation than one crafted simply by party with absolute power.
  22. Every time PR is discussed those whose political interests benefit from false majorities like to trot out the idea that somehow popular centrist parties would have little power, despite more seats, yet barely supported fringe parties would run the show. Your particular aged, conservatism shows when you chose to illustrate it with the fear of different cultures. Try this quick and simple Canadian political quiz to see how many of your views are actually supported by other parties. There is a tonne of overlap for parties to work together on. http://canada.isidewith.com/political-quiz
