  1. It's not money I find evil, it's the sense of entitlement displayed by the me first and the gimme generation....and those close to it "We've already used generous social services and don't need them anymore, now give us tax breaks!" The west rapes the world's resources and helps to create instability, conflict, wars, etc. yet you only feel committed to helping those with Canadian citizenship? Canadian poor would be the envy of those distressed and displaced by conflicts we have helped to create and regimes we assist, finance and sell weapons to. I also like the idea of helping nations adjacent to conflicts deal with caring for refugees. Through donations, security, peace keeping and also doing our share of housing the displaced people. The same financial argument applies to our involvement in the war on ISIS. The cost of contributing a handful of planes could be more effectively spent on humanitarian aid, security, training.
  2. Bonam already handled this very well. The concept of gods certainly exists, just like say Harry Potter; however, there is no evidence of existence beyond that. I don't see how they require belief without evidence. Human rights are enforced concepts we see actual evidence of. Your statement is like saying laws wouldn't exist without faith. For example the protections granted to my property are not subject to the beliefs of others; rather, they are enforced by our society.
  3. Really? As a Canadian you have several rights, which our society has created and then enforced or protected with a series of laws. We have evidence of a list of our rights, evidence of the laws that protect them and evidence of consequences when those rights are violated. What evidence do you have for the existence of a god?
  4. Certainly. Our society has created and granted them.
  5. I'm a Cornwell fan as well. Check out the What Are You Reading Right Now thread here: http://www.mapleleafweb.com/forums/topic/21795-what-are-you-reading-right-now/?p=846297
  6. I don't see how? Please explain.
  7. A common conservative sentiment. Wealthy, aging boomer lived through unprecedented levels of social support and market gains now wants others to fend for themselves so he can keep a few more bucks in his pocket. We, in the west, have raped the world's resources and contributed to the instability around the world. I'm fine with tax dollars helping out humanitarian causes.
  8. Remember when the Harper government refused to sign the UN declaration which designated clean water as a human right? http://on.thestar.com/1QlUH6W

GMO's aren't really a left issue, more of a hangup for the hardcore granola crowd. I have no problem with GMO safety, though there are issues with the fact that GM crops are often used to tie growers into certain pesticides not increase yields, nutrition, etc. Still, I'm not sure how that makes it acceptable to deny Canadians access to clean drinking water.

  9. Remember when Harper spent over a billion dollars to host the G20, something other nations do for millions? That even was complete with a fake lake and gazebos built in a swing riding out of a border security fund. That event also lead to the largest mass arrest in Canadian history. Money well spent, eh cons? http://static0.therichestimages.com/cdn/864/864/90/cw/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/G20.jpg

Mass arrest of people on their way home, TO police up on charges for unlawful detainment. Priceless.

  10. I'm not sure what the ideal number would be. When we hit our budgeted cap for the year, we lean on allies in the UN to do their share. Though, the fact that our diplomatic relations throughout the world have become strained under Harper and our declining interest in peace keeping and humanitarian aid would make that difficult. It will take many years to repair the damage this government has done to our international reputation and our diplomatic relationships.
  11. Faith? At this point humans would be far better off with out it. No Bible or Quran? No problem. Messianic claims and startup cults were a dime a dozen a couple of millennia ago. A different cult, or several others, would have filled the void. To us these religions that became Christianity and Islam would be just like the thousands upon, thousands of others that we are not familiar with. Besides we don't need the stories to no longer exist to move past these dangerous, make believe, hangups. We simply need to stop socially protecting religious ideas, specifically that teaching kids to accept ideas without evidence is a virtue and that religious ideas deserve respect. Once, social protections wane, so does indoctrination and religion becomes a lot like astrology or feng shui. Of course the books themselves will still exist, but we can start treating them like ancient Greek, Norse and Roman religions; quaint man made stories developed to further political agendas, control followers and to take some of the fear of the unknown
  12. There certainly is a limit to what we can handle. The problem is the Harper government has lowered that limit and cut the health care we provide, while talking about how charitable he is out of the other side of his mouth. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/07/04/refugees-health-care-cuts-conservatives-court_n_5557881.html For years we have been able to manage our commitment to humanitarian aid through housing and providing proper care. For years we have been able to provide veterans with pensions and accessible services. Why is it that the Harper government, so fond of sending troops into battle, doesn't like to look after those involved and displaced?
  13. A handful of planes is just a tiny part of the effort and probably wouldn't even be missed. Just ask BC how insignificant our military contribution is. Yet, sheltering, feeding, protecting those displaced by war is an important part of the process in a conflict like this. When citing humanitarian grounds as the reasoning behind joining a war, it's probably important to look after the humans.
  14. Remember when Stephen Harper officially renamed 'The Government of Canada' to 'The Harper Government'? The only PM in Canadian history to insert his name into the official title.

  16. Reefer, FPTP gives 1/3 of voters a chance at absolute power. You're not going to Convince Conservatives that fair is better, when that's not what they want. Though, many will discover the virtues of PR when the right disunites again soon.
  17. This was common practice until about 10 years ago. CPC MPs themselves have criticized the forced pre-committee meetings where PMO staffers give MPs their script and talking points for committee meetings. These meetings used to be where the actual work was done, but Harper has turned them into something like question period. CPC MPs simply read talking points and refuse to stray from them. Doing so would mean loosing favour within the caucus and possibly even being tossed out.
  18. Ok so you support the mission against ISIS. Great...but why? I suspect, that since ISIS is a cruel and brutal regime you support it on humanitarian grounds. Right? That makes sense to me; but what doesn't add up is how so many conservatives will support war on humanitarian grounds, but then defend limiting aid to refugees that have been displaced by war and evil regimes.
  19. So you support a war against ISIS on humanitarian grounds, but not housing refugees displaced by war? Odd.
  20. Defending Harper by citing other corrupt or bad Prime Ministers from the past is a ridiculous act. Canadians must toss corrupt, unaccountable autocrats out, regardless of their party. Right now, Harper has to go so that we can work towards honest, accountable, effective government. Supporting the corrupt, like Harper just encourages the illegal and anti-democratic practices he has become famous for.

  21. Do you support Canadian combat missions in the Middle East?
  22. Harper knows refugee acceptance is down 30%; which, is why he used economic immigration numbers to answer a question about refugee claims. During an election campaign that probably isn't a huge deal, if he didn't already have such a long history of dishonesty and corruption. He struck out in the character department long ago, so he gets called out on everything. That's why it's important to demand better leadership for the country and also to let the CPC find better leadership and repair itself.
  23. “You’ve gotta respect everyone’s beliefs.” No, you don’t. That’s what gets us in trouble. You have to acknowledge everyone’s beliefs, then you have to reserve the right to go: “That is effn' stupid. Are you kidding me?” I acknowledge that you believe that, that’s great, but I’m not going to respect it. I have an uncle that believes he saw Sasquatch. We do not believe him, nor do we respect him!” - Patton Oswalt

I do not think you have to respect a particular belief or faith but you can respect the individuals right to hold that belief. Then he may respect your right to your own beliefs or faith.

  24. Our per capita, economic immigration numbers have been steady for quite some time and are rather high. Though Harper has made it tougher for immigrants to reunite with family and thus family class immigration is down 20%. However, our acceptance of refugees is down 30% under Harper which looks bad when a dead toddler washes up on the shore. So Harper, who is rather comfortable presenting false information, tried to muddy the waters to make his government seem more charitable. Preston Manning once commented on Harper's penchant for lies when he said "word's don't mean much to Stephen." Truth, lie, doesn't matter to Steve as long as he gets what he wants. We deserve a better PM than that.
  25. I thought it looked a little like the Mackinac bridge, which would have been interesting considering it has an Embridge pipeline running underneath it that is 10 years older than it's maximum age and isn't even supported in many places. I expect we will see the Great Lakes flooded with oil sometime soon.
