  1. I agree, though I also feel employers should not have to go to extraordinary lengths to accommodate employee beliefs that prevent them from doing their job. For example, the flight attendant that became a Muslim and then refused to serve alcohol. The small airline often ran into situations where the accommodation meant a reduction in service to their clients and/or an increased workload for other employees. For example, do you feel there is a difference between denying a marriage license to a gay couple based on Christian beliefs and denying a license to an interracial couple based on sincerely held, indoctrinated racist beliefs?
  2. Interesting that you used the phrase "might well be legitimate". In your opinion, when is it acceptable for public employees to discriminate based on their beliefs? Also, do you feel that religious beliefs are more deserving of consideration than other sincerely held beliefs in cases like this?
  3. Harper has created the illusion of a surplus by secretly clawing back budgeted funds. We have veterans who can't get the help they need, yet the CPC denied them over a billion dollars in budgeted, approved and advertised funds. Disgusting!

Budgeting for something then coming back with unspent budgeted money is Great ! for businesses...but smacks of deceit for governments. Look! we're gonna spend X zillions on Y. Aren't we wonderful? Oh look we didn't spend what we said we would. Aren't we wonderful?

Exactly... Even during this campaign, Harper has boasted about spending X amount of budgeted funds on Veterans affairs, even though over a billion was clawed back. He's trying to play it both ways.

Peter F, that's exactly what's happening. It's very deceitful playing it both ways. This past year they've over-promised then under-delivered to hit surplus...on purpose so they can wave around talking points before the election. They're playing politics with people's services and jobs.

  4. Are you claiming that this is a case of Christian persecution?
  5. In this example you have added a wrinkle to the equation that goes beyond personal belief. In this case the parties seeking a service on are not simply racists, they are also behaving in a verbally abusive manner. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison, is it? If the clerks in your example happened to know that the parties seeking a marriage license were racists, but the behaviour of the license seekers was not abusive while requesting the document, then it should be issued. However, if anyone seeking a product or service is behaving in an abusive manner I believe employees have the right to refuse service and ask them to leave. Edit: Typo
  6. It would be despicable for anyone, regardless of their preferred fairy tale, to defy the law and refuse to grant marriage licences based on personal beliefs.
  7. Study suggests that not all liberals are geniuses and all conservatives are ignorant. The idea is that for those who lack a cognitive ability to grasp complexities of our world, strict-right wing ideologies may be more appealing. Dr. Brian Nosek explained it for the Huffington Post as follows, “ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simple solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies.”

Education is run by left wingers. It's almost impossible to get a teaching job as a conservative. University in Canada teaches that the west is evil. All white people are basically racist colonialists. Crack open any modern sociology, history or political science book. It's all right there. If education was more balanced this wouldn't be the case.

  8. Would you agree that our capitalist, market based economy would benefit from wealthier middle and lower classes? It seems logical that by increasing the minimum wage and thus raising the income of the poorest, we reduce the need for our safety net and increase the number of consumers in our market. Near 100% of income increases on the lower-middle and lower classes is returned to the local economy through purchases, as they tend not to be meeting all of their needs. Whereas, income increases experienced by the upper-middle classes and above is generally not returned to the local economy.

  11. The same book tells us to love thy neighbour, which is nice, but to also kill said neighbour if they do not believe in God. Sure, the Bible and Quran are just silly ancient stories like those of Zeus and Thor, but it's actually faith that transforms them into something problematic and even dangerous. Once, people believe the moral dictates in the "good books" are divinely mandated, quaint ancient scrawlings become extremely powerful rules. Another problem is that religious texts being static, as they are, now make the morals within it unchanging. Slavery, misogyny and killing apostates may have been morally acceptable practices in the ancient world, but western societal ethics have progressed well beyond those of ancient Middle Easterners. Immutable moral dictates of today, no matter how good, impede those of tomorrow; and history has shown that tomorrow's moral code is almost always more appealing than yesterday's. In short, faith is poisonous from the very first drop. It is faith itself that grants these ancient texts the power to impede morality today. Hence, we have adults who believe they are acting morally when they protest funerals, attack equal rights, deny access to birth control, etc. Faith is not a virtue and the indoctrination of children is a practice that we should work hard to eradicate if we are to do our best to improve human well-being and fully advance universal ethics.
  12. Again, this is an idea, to strive for. Humans should be considered free and equal in dignity and rights from birth. This only applies to humans lucky enough to live in societies that enforce these ideals. I agree with this goal...but much/most of the world does not. I fail to see why it requires belief without evidence.
  13. I don't think humans are born with any rights outside of what a society grants them. We can certainly argue that all humans/animals/whatever should have certain rights. Again that is just an idea, not a tangible thing.
  14. Interesting, how is possible it that workers in developed nations manage to work in safer, healthier environments at greater compensation rates than their counterparts in developing nations? Labour compensations and standards in the developed world far exceeded those of developing nations long before manufacturing jobs started to relocate. Corporations moved manufacturing facilities to nations with cheap labour rates and lax environmental, health and safety standards when new free trade agreements removed financial penalties on imports. Governments, at the request of major corporations, made this possible. This has been very profitable for multinationals and has lead to the redistribution of middle class wealth to the ownership class, or the infamous 1%. Free trade agreements between unequal nations have certainly slowed progress on environmental standards and depressed wages in the first world and have hastened our conservative race to the bottom. However, the explosive increase in the practice of using temporary foreign workers under Harper is a little different. They interfere with local market forces just like a mandated price cap would on the other side of the ledger. Imagine a government mandating that gas must be sold at 95 cents per litre. Is that fair to businesses in markets that would be willing to pay $1.25? Of course not. So why is it acceptable to short circuit the labour market in certain industries by filling jobs at, slightly below, the cheapest possible wage? The answer is, it is not acceptable.
  15. Voting Conservative is NOT the Christian thing to do. Oh oh, CPC...it seems the abortion and homosexual issues are loosing their hold on Christian populations in Canada. http://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2015/09/08/voting-conservative-not-the-christian-thing-to-do.html

It's more conservative than voting for liberals. By definition.

  16. Use of TFWs has exploded under Harper. If we find it acceptable for market forces to dictate the price of goods and services based on supply and demand, do you consider it acceptable for employers to, skirt labour market forces, and artificially depress wages through the use of cheap, temporary workers?
  17. It's time for unions and activist groups to really push the ABC (Anyone But Conservative) message to avoid vote splitting within our dysfunctional electoral system. The 70% or so that will currently support something other than the Harper party should chose the strongest ABC option in their riding. In my newly altered riding, that candidate (currently) is from the NDP. The perfect image for Harper's campaign so far:
  18. Agreed. JT says the legislation needs to be changed and oversight added but that message is easily lost. With the legislation as is, he should have opposed it.
  19. That's exactly what she should do, but she is on a crusade for "religious freedom" for Christians only. Which is really a Christian Theocracy.
  20. If beliefs of any kind, religious or otherwise, prevent someone from fulfilling their duties, it's time for them to find a new job or different role within the company.
  21. I'm fine with homework, provided that it isn't the mindless busy work that is assigned far too often. At some point, it became normal to simply just assign homework, every class, regardless of the need. I'd rather see teachers use diagnostics (entrance/exit slips, surveys, formative quizzes, etc.) to constantly gauge areas of strength and weakness then target specific online help resources to reinforce areas of need. With current technology a targeted approach like this can do more good in far less time. Which, is important because extra curriculars and family time is just as important as academic subjects. When students spend 6 hours in class, we shouldn't just mindlessly assign a second shift at night.
  22. To tie this back to the OP, here is another idea. The Bible and Quran are chock-full of morally despicable ideas. Those of us that have read the 'Good Book' can attest that it has as many sick, violent, misogynistic, hateful and sometimes just simply bizarre ideas as it does ethical and useful ones. Evil people aren't twisting the scripture to suit their own purposes though, the passages are just simply evil by today's standards. This is to be expected though. When humans created the texts that became the Bible and Quran we were a primitive, violent, ignorant, tribal species with a very short life span. However, we have advanced on all fronts and our ethical standards are lightyears beyond what they were when these fledgling cults were being created. Like humans did with Thor or Zeus why have we not outgrown these quaint but dangerous ideas created by ancient men? The answer is faith and indoctrination. We teach children that belief without evidence is an act to be celebrated and part of being a good person. As we do with the idea of teaching racism, in much of our society, indoctrinating belief in gods, prior to the development of critical thinking, should be considered socially abhorrent. That should, at least, be our goal anyway. We tolerate it when our grandparents use racial slurs, but would condemn it among our peers. The big issue with homosexual rights and equality is non-existent for those under 35; it's primarily only a hangup for the aged and the religious. We need to stop protecting religious ideas with a social cocoon of respect and start advancing the ethics of "spirituality", by questioning and condemning these very unethical religious texts and the very idea of faith as a virtue. Hopefully, to the point that the word "spiritual" itself becomes an anachronism.
  23. I fail to see how stating that all people should have the right to X and be treated equal on the basis of Y requires belief without evidence. These are simply the creation of ideas. For example: Creating a story or the idea of a Sasquatch, superhero or omnipotent being doesn't require faith. However, believing in the actual existence of Big Foot, Spiderman or God does.
  24. On top of the corruption, attacks on democracy and our veterans, remember Harper's war on information and evidence. Harper killed the Long Form Census and lied about the head of Stats Can recommending the action, prompting him to resign in protest. He also muzzled scientists, ended world class research projects and literally burned science libraries. When the facts don't support his ideology, Harper burries the evidence.

If he was a good leader for this country, I wouldn't care if Harper liked to eat baby cows or baby cats. His attacks on science, information, the environment, democracy, transparency, accountability and of course our veterans, while simultaneously sporting a brutal economic track record make him one of the worst PMs in history. Supporting Harper just encourages corrupt leadership from all parties going forward. We deserve better.

  25. Remember when Harper broke his promise to cut $1.4 billion in oil subsidies? No? Neither did he, oil co's still get assistance. Instead he cut over $1B from childcare subsidies. We deserve better than Harper!
