  1. @Gaétan The thread title is poorly constructed. If you want people to actually contribute to your threads, you need to provide more context than two words.

Also, a two sentence post isn't going to attract much either - so I would edit this thread/post and provide more context.

On the other hand, for the first time today, a word got *****  out in my post instead of blocking the posting and being highlighted as banned. That's new. To me anyway.

I can actually specific if the "bad word" is "blanked out" with **** or whether the word stops the post completely (and you're asked to edit) - depending on the word.

I still need to update all the words to be blanked out, rather than restricting the act of posting.

But again, I recognize the members can still make adjustments to the word, getting creative with symbols and characters - but that's life.

P.s.  Why is the word "organisation" underlined as incorrect spelling?  This is a Canadian website, isn't it?  :P

    Not any more.

It's a long story, but recently myself, and the operations have moved to the United States.  The forum software is also American... so you're going to get a few Americanized things around here.  However, the forum still skews Canada in membership and engagement, but that is decreasing with time.

Users by county, over the past 28 days:

You can ignore the Singapore metric, as that was mostly bot traffic, that I've had to filter out (to minimize server stress).

  4. OK, if you see this happening again, or anyone else does, please post in the support section of the forums.

I have an update to made to the forum software, maybe it was a bug that will be fixed in this new version.

I'll also modify how the word filter works, which should stop the restriction of the posting.

One quibble... a bit of warning before changing over next time please? Even ten seconds!? Just long enough to save.

    Ha, true, true.

    That's on me, 100%.

I got up this morning, and I was "THIS IS GETTING DONE TODAY!" and I never looked back.

I'm sorry you lost whatever post you were working on. Normally I give plenty of notice, but I was really frustrated by the issues over the past month, and today was the first day back after Christmas, and I was eager to put all of this behind us!

    Thanks again for having patience!

It's my fault? Oh well. My bad I guess.  In any case, I haven't seen anything as slow as this since the early days of dial-up speed.

It isn’t your fault, it’s mine.

i waited to long to upgrade and this is the result.

It will be fixed shortly, thanks got your patience.

  7. A slight update, it look like the site is being hit hard by bots... I've activated Under Attack mode in Cloudflare - so each new session (each time you visit the site), you'll be put through a Cloudflare JS challenge.

That's a temporary fix... once we upgrade, this will be removed.

  8. The site needs to be move to a larger VPS - there is no hosting company, I manage the site via a VPS in a large datacenter in the United States.

We use Cloudflare as a reverse proxy, for security and performance.

However, over the past 2 decades the site has picked up 1.6M posts, and that means the MySQL db is quite large. Coupled with a fair amount of concurrent/active users, that can put strain on the underpowered VPS.

However, the server migration is on my long list of things to do in Dec.

Since active moderation has ceased on this site,  personal insults have become the norm.

Active moderation has not ceased and insults have always been present in some shape or form since the forums inception.

My new policy is that members will not be censored or removed for the use of insults.  Feel free to use them - but also know that your ideas will likely be tarnished and ignored.

The forum is free of porn, spammers, etc - believe me, that takes active moderation on my part...

  10. Here are a few from my old stomping grounds:

    Onefourhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onefour,_Alberta

My father run Onefour substation for years, its remote as one can get in SE AB.

    Special Areas - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Area_No._2

As a child l lived reasonably close to Special Areas, and outside of northern Alberta you're not going to find a place more empty. I've actually driven between Onefour and the northern part of Special Areas multiple times, and it's basically lonely gravel and crown lease land for as far as the eye can see.

Gargantuan and Cleft caves in the Crowsnest Range - Google Map

We used to hike up, camp and then go spelunking in the various caves in the region.  It's about a 8 hour hike in, and it's moderately hard, so there isn't many people up there and it's definitely isolate.  Don't get hurt up there, it'd be expensive to extract you!

  11. You're not imagining it.

A member requested account deletion, including removal of their content.

What that happens, their posts and threads are removed, which unfortunately removes other postings ON those affected threads.

I'm sorry this happened, but if I'm going to respect people's contributions, it means I have to abide by removal requests.

Please start up another thread on the same topic, other members will certainly continue where they left off.
