  1. Who is blaming the Conservatives? I've pointed out that they are in power and they've got some decisions to make on what to do now. Moreover, they have an election coming sooner than later. They promised another 1% cut in the GST. The question is: Is that the best way to stimulate the economy if we are indeed going into a dip?
  2. I believe you're right about the security committee. It's funny that in one of the democratic forms of government in the world, Israel has the ability to wage war with little or no oversight from Parliament. And moreover, the security is such that they can throw you into the slammer for years with no trial and no outside contact.
  3. Thankfully, the Egyptians are keep a lpw profile. They're still pissed that terrorists are using their country as a base to attack foreigners.
  4. Can't say that I've even heard of it being an issue in private schools in Canada either. The U.S., on the other hand, seems destined for a court challenge.
  5. Israel lands troops near Syria. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14128276/
  6. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14137751/ It has been a battle of the boards of education and in the courts. Could the Supreme Court eventually decide that Darwin shouldn't be taught in schools?
  7. http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/200...st-tuesday.html The young boy has been found alive. They youth and the sex offender are still missing although police may have them cornered.
  8. All I can say is thank heaven that Canada isn't going to be sending troops. Whoever ends up going there is going to subjected to suicide bombers if hey even attempt to do anything to stop Hezbollah from moving back into the area. Ick, what a mess.
  9. http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/200...st-tuesday.html Israel is rushing in more troops. It certainly looks like are getting deeper and deeper into Lebanon. I just don't know if they will be able to get out and actually have changed things there.
  10. I didn't say bad yet. I said that there are signs the economy is slowing. And Alberta probably needs a breather too. It is at the point that certain companies are now thinking about moving employees *out* of Alberta because they have no place to house them after they are recruited. I think the Calgary Herald and the Calgary Sun have had some articles on the difficukty in finding houses. And when speculators havea go at things, it often leads to a bubble that hurts ordinary people along the way. I mean, how can house keep going up tens of thousands every six months without things imploding? Calgary knows better because this has happened to them before.
  11. In Canada, prior to World War 2 there was a debate in September of 1939. I think there had to be given that Canada was not directly in the conflict. In the United States, it was an attack that drew the U.S. into the war. I believe Roosevelt still had to go to Congress for a declaration of war though. A pretty easy task give the devastation at Pearl Harbor.
  12. I won't be doing any search based on the vagueness of your answer.
  13. Sadly, there is no provision for the 'dangerous offender' classification to keep him locked up beyond his sentences. It only applies to convictions where the sentence was 10 yrs or more. The law needs to be changed first. I rather hope some father of an abused child (or a group of them) catch him before the police do... Hmm, what about that young woman was was locked up in Alberta under that provision? Her sentence was never over two years originally. I'm not expert on the criminal code but when that case and others came up, lawyers were saying that it was possible under the law to deem someone a dangerous offender for a minor offence and keep them in jail indefinitely.
  14. Welcome to the forum. What white brother are you referring to?
  15. I think that article is only available to subscribers. Also, those figures are likely American figues. Chrysler's most productive and best rated factories have been in Canada. This has been true of GM and Ford as well. They might cut production but it doesn't necessarily mean it will be the Canadian factories that are cut. And Canadian sales have differed from U.S. sales. Two different markets. I have no idea what the latest results are. Buy Canadian sounds good but Canada lives on exports. We are more likely to suffer from chauvinistic policies on trade.
  16. I think in this guy's case, there may have merit in keeping him in jail under a rarely used dangerous offender law that has no provisions for release.
  17. People often forget that it is the children that this is about. Good for you for never losing sight of that. There was a reason that the courts got involved in the cases taken to the Supreme Court. It's because the husband and wife couldn't come to a deal on child support.
  18. I have to agree there. I also don't know if Israel is prepared to go all the way to Beirut basically burning the entire country all the was and possibly taking on a couple of Arab countries to boot. Most Middle East experts are cringing about what it all might end up as.
  19. Winnipeg has had to adjust its economy several times over the decades. We've lost skilled people both east and west and yet the economy continues to chug along. One of the big complaints has been about wages. Private businesses just don't pay as well as other places. It is probably why you have people create their own busineses. A diversified economy is all important to long term growth.
  20. I agree that if the U.S. does poorly, Canada will do not as well. There is a little more than two years left with Bush in office. If he is more or less a lameduck after the elections in the fall, he might not be able to anything to stop the economy from going through a down cycle.
  21. I've never had to look for a job in Ottawa but they seem to have job growth listed each year and an low unemployment., lower than Toronto's at least. Sometimes, we need to do new training to qualify for better paying work. Sometimes, we have to relocate.
  22. And that story is that the Iroqois have never been in violent conflict with anyone? Why do so many Ojibway believe that Iroqois fought them?
  23. All other First Nations just got it wrong about the Iroqois? Why would they believe that about the Iroqois? Because non-Natives told them that? I'm sure that if some Ojibway could you hear you now, they'd call you out on this. In fact, I think some might be angry at your response. And you've never really answered the question about what would happen if the Iroqois got what they wanted. If the land reverted to the Iroqois, would the non-Natives be able to become members of the community with *all* rights that an Iroqois had. And if not, why not? In fact, I'd like to hear exactly what you think the Iroqois land and people would be like if you got all that you asked for.
  24. http://www.cbc.ca/story/business/national/.../07/31/gdp.html The worst time to call an election is when the economy might tank. We are are seeing some indication in the U.S. that the bottom has fallen out of the housing market. That isn't the case yet in Canada but May was terrible for GDP growth. Will the Conservatives try a major tax cut before the election to stimulate the economy and win a majority? Is a GST cut the best way to do that?
  25. You don't have to declare war on someone to be at war. And being allied with someone in a war means that you are at war. It's funny how some Ojibways have a different attitude about who they have been in a war with. Read their websites and they have some bad things to say. But ultimately, they say they defeated the Iroqois. http://www.tolatsga.org/ojib.html That is just one of many stories written about the Ojibway and their history. Is that a myth or are they lying? Peace loving people don't have violent conflicts with their neighbors whatever the dispute. That is not to say that a society can't become peaceful but it is a willful re-writing of history to say that you never were at war with someone. For this reason, I am a bit fearful about the outcome of disputed territory and the promise of a peaceful outcome. You have already said here that Non-native people caught up in Iroquis land claims would be treated differently if the Iroqois were in power. You have said to take faith that Iroqois would do no harm. But you have also said that the Iroqois never declared war on anyone. The Ojibway say differently.
