  1. Given the recent events, I guess no longer an attractive destination.
  2. This coming weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the failed coup-attempt in Moscow, which meant that the Soviet Union was finished. The attempted coup also prompted the Baltic States to declare that their independence was restored.
  3. Women's wrestling is much nicer to watch than women's boxing.
  4. Hillary will campaign that she will be a "nothing will change"-president.
  5. I remember that picture. Somehow I guessed someone would get upset about it.
  6. I like watching volleyball but that beachvolley is just rubbish. It is having fun when on a picnic in a beach but serious sport? Never! Unfortunately it seems to be the TV-director's favourite event as it seems to be on all the time.
  7. USA is the biggest of the rich countries and that's why they top the medal-table. In fact it would be embarrassing for them if they didn't. However I'm sure that in the future olympics it will be the Chinese topping the medal-table with a long gap to the next ones.
  8. I must say that there is almost nothing that gives me more pleasure in the schadenfreude-way than the British complaining about immigration as invasion. Hahaa, many of those people seem totally oblivious to their own country's history. Absolutely zero sympathy for them! Let London sink into a third world cesspool! Too bad that I have relatives living in London but no can do.
  9. I can see Canada has two gold-medals. I don't know where they are from but well done nevertheless. I sincerely hope that Finland doesn't get a single medal in these games. That would serve right all those big fat sport-bosses whose number in Rio is bigger than the number of actual athletes. My hope may come true. The only realistic medal-chance in the remaining events is men's javelin. Shooters and sailors used to be big hope for Finland but both have thus far failed miserably.
  10. Lithuania could finish second in basketball after, you know who, as Lithuania have been outstanding so far. Remarkable that such a small country excels at a game which is probably second only to soccer in world-wide popularity. Compared to basketball hockey is an insignificant backyard-game.
  11. Silly really to have tennis, golf, rugby or even soccer included in the olympics. Those sports have their established championship-competitions and the olympics has no chance of challenging those competitions of the sports involved as the most craved title.
  12. The ideal outcome: Hillary wins but is forced to resign before even taking office and the running-mate becomes president.
  13. I don't know how strong the catholic church is still in Latin-America but probably much stronger than in Europe where even in the nominally catholic countries religion has become almost irrelevant.
  14. For you in North-America these games must be a nice exception as they are hosted by a country on your time-zone most of the events are at convinient times, which is not the case when the games are in Europe or Asia. For us in Europe most of the interesting stuff in Rio takes place in the middle of the night.
  15. Isn't it so that athletics isn't even a popular spectator-sport in the USA? The world class US-sprinters take to the sport only because they are not good enough for football. It has been suggested that those who were good enough for football could easily become world record breakers in 100m, 200m and 400m races if they had chosen athletics instead of football, which nobody does if there is an even choice.
  16. The killers probably thought that people would be outraged because they killed a priest as it would be the biggest insult to muslims to attack a mosque and kill an imam. However, they were wrong in that respect. People were outraged because the victim was an old man, not because he was a priest as in today's Europe the importance of religion has fallen to become almost irrelevant.
  17. Nice to watch; definitely better than American football: VIDEO LINK
  18. I'm surprised that the game hasn't caught on more widely both in North-America and worldwide as it is definitely more entertaining and watchable than American football. Having said that, doesn't the game suffer from a reputation of being something of a girls' game?
  19. Has sailing ever not been an Olympic-sport? One reason why a land-locked country could never host summer-olympics is because arranging the sailing-competition would be a tad difficult.
  20. Wasn't the Montreal games slightly ruined because there was a boycott from African countries as a protest against letting South-Africa into the games and the boycott more or less watered down the middle and long-distance events? Then the next two olympics were marred by boycotts as well as in 1980 the USA boycotted the Moscow-games because of the Soviet invasion of Afganistan and four years later the Warsaw Pact-countries boycotted the Los Angeles games in a boycott which was just a tit for tat for the west's boycott of Moscow. In the 1984 games the hammer-throw gold-medal was won by a Finnish thrower. However, he was ridiculed and made fun of that victory for the rest of his life because at the time there were at least 10 better hammer-throwers in the world but they all were Russian or from the other Eastern bloc-countries which boycotted the games. Therefore the Finnish guy's gold medal was seen as meaningless and nothing to be proud of.
  21. The British are probably the best in the world when it comes to intelligence services such as detecting terrorism and foiling terrorist-plots. They received a lot of experience from the IRA in the 80's. The French are not nearly as good and that's probably why terrorists keep on targetting France. For the French authorities Paris-attacks was bad but especially bad was that a similar attack happened again so short time after. It was a humiliation for the French authorities.
  22. It is embarassing for NATO to have a member like Turkey but its location is so crucial that the talks of kicking Turkey out of the alliance unless they mend their ways is just fantasy.
  23. If things really start getting even more serious as they are now the President can declare a state of emergency, which also means cancelling the elections but that is all conspiracy-theory.
  24. I agree. Gives him an excuse to carry out a purge in the military as well as the judiciary.
  25. Tomorrow could be serious as the Republican party-convention begins in Cleveland and the New Black Panthers are coming to protest. Things could easily escalate out of control.
