Brazil won olympic gold but the olympic tournament is only for under 23's.

Hillary Chooses Tim Kaine as VP
-TSS- replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
That could be a factor too but I was thinking more of the scandals surrounding her. -
But must be in a decline even in those countries?

I doubt Hillary could last a full term, so this guy may become President. -
The Brits have done something right in the past 20 years. In Atlanta they got one gold medal, which was a dismal performance by their standards. Now they got 27.

Where have you travelled (going to travel) open thread
-TSS- replied to msj's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
I guess if you really try to drive from one end of Canada to the other you must take some precautions in case of a breakdown of your car as there must be a lot of places where you can see nobody else anywhere around. Those precautions include things like taking extra food and drink with you. -
It is no wonder why women are more in favour of immigration from the Middle-East as western men seem to have become so feminised. Of course there is the paradox that while women favour the immigration of the so-called alpha-males in the culture of those men women are often worth less than cattle. If feminists had any logic at all they would be up in arms against immigration from countries of backward cultures.

About half of the countries participating the olympics don't get a single medal. Some of them are actually quite big countries as well. Then look at India; their tally is one silver and one bronze. A country of over 1bn population. However, they don't seem to care. I have never heard Indians complaining how relatively badly they perform at the olympics. It's just not a big deal for them.

I would be more worried about the Central-American countries.

There is still javelin left to compete but I wouldn't place too much hope on our guy. I'm glad that Finland is doing totally shit. The fat highly-paid sport-bosses and other bureaucrats may be sacked, which serves them right.

Third world immigration does not solve anything; only adds to the problem. Besides a lot of jobs, especially those so-called low-skilled ones, will be automated; cars and buses will drive themselves. Robots will clean the offices.

Admit it; you would happily give away 20-30 medals only if you could beat Bolt but as no such exchange exists you just have to accept that Bolt is superior.

Earlier in these games when I was watching archery I couldnt help thinking what a powerful weapon the bow and arrow still could be. If you had to choose between two sides one with bow and arrow and the other with the 17th-century version of firearms which takes a long time to reload, which side would you choose to be on?

Britain Sets Date for EU Referendum -- Brexit
-TSS- replied to scribblet's topic in The Rest of the World
Yes, the referendum was advisory and parliament can ignore it but if they do that they set a dangerous precedent. What will they ignore next? The stereotypical view of an average Brexit-voter is a person who is racist, xenophobic little Englander. However, one of the arguments in favour of Brexit was that being shackled to the EU is stupid when there is the whole wide world out there beyond the boundaries of Europe. -
Your thoughts on official unilingualism?
-TSS- replied to Machjo's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
French is a global language as well. Think about Ireland where students have to learn Irish, or Garlic whatever the real name of the language, which is practically a dead language. -
Other sportsmen would have live to be 100 years old and be unbeatable to have the opportunity to get 22 gold medals.

Brexit could be delayed over the French and German elections next year. -
The tournament lacks tradition therefore it has no prestige.
-
Why was the Canada-cup buried? It was a perfect workable format and the tournaments were classic. Especially the 1987 finals.

I would imagine that quite a few in the rural Quebec. -

Is it really a possibility to lose out on a lucrative career in Canada if you can't speak French which is mostly useless anyway? -
The USA winning basketball, both men and women, must be the surest gold-medals of the games. Shame for otherwise great game that one team is so one-sidedly dominant.
-
One thing these games will be remembered for is the badly behaved spectators. I knew from soccer that Brazilians aren't exactly well-behaved but the episode of the pole vault-race as well as the same contest medal ceremony really made Brazilians look stupid.

Where have you travelled (going to travel) open thread
-TSS- replied to msj's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
Canada and the USA are vast countries, which may explain their inability/unwillingness for overseas travel. On the other hand, Australia is a vast country and for them overseas travelling is like a rite of passage, something you are expected to do. New Zealand is not a big country but it is remote as hell and therefore travelling must be expensive but it hasn't stopped them. Overall, a question of priorities. -
Hillary Clinton and her health problems.
-TSS- replied to taxme's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I'm sure she can manage one term as a one-term president is what she will be.
