10 Things Christians and Atheists Can and Must Agree On....
Drea replied to M.Dancer's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
All bow to the church of science, knowledge and understanding! oooOOoooOOoooo When is the next meeting and how much is my tithing? Oh yah right -- its in our taxes that go to pay for science to be taught in school so never mind... I am going to make a shrine to science complete with black skull shaped candles and a dna model... and I will pray to it each and every day. Yah think the "god of science -- what's the name of THAT god again? -- will grant me three wishes? Yah think? Ooooo I can hardly wait!! -

what did you consider that an insult? It wasn't. It was a simple observation of the people I know who spend a portion of their lives in the states. Exactly. And you are more conservative than the average Canadian... you certainly are no lefty LOL. Of course. Did I say we look different? We DO have differing philosophies and differing social constructs -- gun control, our social safety net, and healthcare, and abortion (no provinces have made abortion illegal -- some states have) level of religious involvement, debt per household -- see lots of differences. But that is not an insult to either country, simply an observation. -

Some people see the US and Canada as interchangeable. Living in both countries is part of their lives. Allthough I would find it difficult to compare, city to city or even province to state. Canadians and Americans are different. Philosophically and socially. The people that do travel back and forth (the Canadians, the ones I know) tend to be more conservative than the average Canadian. I suppose it's their direct exposure to more wide-spread conservatisim while in the states. -

Oh Puuulease! Is the earth flat? How far must one travel before one falls off the edge? Your argument holds no water River. Science is testable and proveable -- your fantastic notion of an entity controlling things is not. -

I know the earth revolves around the sun because I can get on a shuttle and test it if I had the million of dollars to do it with. See! How many times have I said that religious folks cannot (or will not) imagine life without a "diety" or "faith" of some kind. I guess that's natural -- I cannot know exactly what it is like to worship a diety and they cannot know exactly what it is like not to. They believe there MUST be SOMETHING beyond our day to day lives. This has never been proven. Eons ago our stoneage ancestors believed they needed to prostrate themselves so that Mr. Sun would rise in the am. Today we know that the sun will rise, and indeed, we know WHY and HOW it rises. We do not just have "faith" that some scientist is correct -- sheesh. In the future the same level of knowledge will be attained regarding gods. People will laugh at how naive we were back in the 21st century. -

This is one of those topics that people are afraid to say how they really feel. I see it every day. Who is sitting, wasted or passed out on benches after welfare day? They are afforded every opportunity -- and yet few take advantage of it. And I, for one taxpayer, am tired of paying for it. Something needs to be done for them to integrate into society. Giving them "special status" does just the opposite. -

Because "moral code", religious or otherwise, stems from human beings. The ten commandments are a good example -- except for the ones about worship -- the rest are simple human rights. Don't kill, don't steal, etc. are products of humanity being humane. -
Of course NO ONE wants to die so we automatically call out to "god" or "whoever" in times of strife or when our lives are in danger. Does not prove anything except that humans fear the finality of death.

With all due respect, it is statements like this that feed the animosity between 'believers' and 'non-believers'. Religious people do not need 'brainwashing' to think everything is a 'belief'. It is a logical process of projection that almost all humans are guilty of. Accusing religious folks of being 'brainwashed' is not helpful or condusive to a meaningful discussion. You are right and I apologize -- just getting a tad frustrated trying to reason with some folks... my bad. here are those links I promised: Age of Reason Click on the "Age of Reason" link in red... and then go to "what's new" -- some good articles IMO From the Article -- Those Fanatical Atheists: -

My my aren't we full of wit this morning. OooOOoOooo. -
There are those who had after-death experiences (is that the right term?) My mom had it (being drawn to this very bright light) only to be resuscitated, and it spurred her fervor even more. I had a talk with a woman over a pint who confided about an after-death experience as a child. It made her a true-believer. I have to admit that I wondered if my mom was only hallucinating. But it's not what she said she saw that got to me. It was the way she became after that experience. I've never seen her with such religious vigor and enthusiasm, that at her age (mid-eighties), she actively helped in the restoration of our church. She was so motivated. So "gung-ho." Something in that after-death experience had only made her faith stronger. ****** Edited. Our brains -- our wonderful human brains -- make up stuff. Just like a dream that seems so real you're not sure if you are awake or not. We have all been taught to "go into the white light" so someone "seeing" a white light is not proof of anything except the fact that they believe they will go to a light. Nothing scientific there... If there is life after death why has no one (not one single person, ever ever) come back to tell us?

That is exactly what I mean. Religies are so brainwashed into thinking everything is a "beleif". I believe I'll go have a cig before I start work. Cheerios heathens! LOL -

The doctrine of "Human Rights" is simply another form of religious dogma which can be as oppressive as any theological dogma. No it's not. Human rights have nothing to do with any type of god outside of ourselves. They have everything to do with treating humans humanely with no "reward" at the end. No "you get to go to heaven 'cause yer a good boy". Geez. There has been how many threads on this topic now? And as always the religies cannot (or will not) admit that they believe in a fantasy. Yes the belief in god is pure fantasy. Just because the fantasy has been around for 2000 years does not make it any more real than someone "making up" a god today. If someone wrote a book about a god named "Bob" would you believe it? Of course not. Silly people. I was on a really good site last night at home. I'll link it later -- the best I've ever read regrading religion and how it has outlived its usefulness. -

If natives were treated equally and not receive any special "status" from the govt then this "percieved" racism would end. The Indian Act affords special treatment (free post secondary education, tax exemptions, etc) which fosters racism. The lousy bastards should work for a living. I am such a racist bitch that when I see a native driving I nice new car I figure they should thank me (and all the other sugardaddy taxpayers) for it. Oooga booga. -

Is your moral framework based on the belief that there is NO Santa Claus? Of course it isn't. Its based on what you were taught growing up. If you were taught to be moral you will be. If you were taught to be immoral you will be. We get morals from our parents "Junior! Don't spit milk all over your grandmother, its rude"... teaching a moral that others don't want to be spat upon. Whether or not a person was brought up in a religious household does not matter on the "morals" front. The little suicide bomber is being taught by his religion and his parents that it IS moral to kill yourself if you kill an infidel. If everyone believed in human rights and no one believed in god we would all be better off. -

NOTHING will stop me from gettin' my large double double or iced cap... mmmm Somebody driving thru probably taped it there. Nothing to do with the rest of the customers or the owner. Now go out and get yer coffees! LOL -
While I don't like Rosie personally -- I do like her message. Its unfortunate that so many people base their opinion of her message on her looks. She is loud and boorish and many "regular" (meaning non-freaked-out-conspiracy-theorists) people are turned off of her message by her attitude. She needs to tone it down so people will be able to relate to her message rather than attacking her for being a loud, bitchy, fat, disgusting feminazi.

4.7 most of the people in the senarios were n-a-s-t-y IMO. I mean really -- wanting to trip a bus passenger for no reason?

Gee and I'm wondering which bonehead said there was proof that God does exist... That would be me sweetheart! One point for M. Dancer! I said that when *6 million jews* were slaughtered your invisible god guy was nowhere to be seen, he (it!) did not even help his/it's chosen people -- proof he/it does not exist IMO. LOL -

Religious folk cannot (or will not) wrap their brains around the fact that an atheist believes in nothing -- "How can you believe in NOTHING? -- You MUST believe in SOMETHING!?" or "Atheism is a CULT!" -- that one really makes me laugh... -
There is nothing "illusive" about life. Our human mind (and all the itty bitty animal/insect minds too) are simply neurons firing and connecting. There isn't like a "little soul" inside your brain... Your thoughts are just this, nothing more. Your dreams too -- all just boring old neurons firing away. Notice the Alzhiemers or stroke patient -- some of his/her neurons no longer fire properly as they are damaged. When we die we all of our neurons stop firing and, like a burned out lightbulb, we are done.
