  1. All "things" religious should be kept out of schools. Sing "Frosty the Snowman" but not "Silent Night" (sing that one at home or church) Act out "Winter Wonderland" but not "Baby in a Manger" (belongs in home or church). Christmas (can we rename it please!) is about giving and sharing. It is a pagan ritual during winter solstace. It is a festival celebrating longer days and the coming of spring. Has dick all to do with a prophet.
  2. I'm baaack. and I see the five year olds are having fun fun fun!
  3. I live in the real world and see things with my own eyes. That's all I'm sayin'. I was there. Believe me or not. Your prob not mine. Gotta go -- I've got propaganda to sell! Cheers!
  4. sure quote the CBC! I thought you rightwingers hated the CBC!? If you are in BC or AB -- DRIVE UP THERE for pete sake. See for yourself. Frig if I would've known I'd be discussing this I would have taken a bunch of pictures of the filth, the decay, the boarded up buildings. Who are you going to believe -- the CBC? the Cariboo Regional District propaganda site? Or a person who WAS JUST THERE IN PERSON. Have you ever been out of your basement? The world is REAL hon. People actually do drive vehicles and actually do go into real buildings. The world is NOT virtual. Sometimes you need to SEE something for yourself with your own eyes (for REAL, not on a TV or computer screen) A masochist? Huh? Have you never returned to your hometown after leaving or do you burn all your bridges?
  5. They certainly are supposed to be White. Do you even KNOW what a Chamber of Commerce is? What is a Chamber Of Commerce Have you ever been a member of a Chamber? Have you ever worked for a Chamber? Have you ever been on the board of a Chamber? Served on a committee? I have.
  6. WalMart came to Quesnel well after I left. I believe it was in 2000/01. The reason I used Quesnel as an example is that I was just up there, it's my home town and it is decaying. Matter of fact, hubby and I were just discussing buying some acreage up there because it's cheap. BTW, I don't hate WalMart (or any other big box store in the right context), I shop there.
  7. No one (government or otherwise) has banned Christmas carols. As far as purging the government of religious displays, bible readings and graduation prayers I am all for it. If elected gov't officials can have bible readings, why not the koran readings? Government should be a-religious like a Chamber of Commerce (no dears that's not a bank!) is a-political. There should be no religious symbolism/actions whatsoever in any gov't building. Ever.
  8. Less than 2000 people in a 10 year period... gooood example Where I live now there are >3000 people moving in per year. No stats for you as I am unwiling to tell you exactly where in the Lower Mainland I live, you could be a stalker! Why not just drive up to the Cariboo and see for yourself. When I went to school there (70's - 80's) there were 2 junior highs and 2 seniors highs. Now there are only two high schools. The elementary school I went to has closed. Went searching for BC Population comparison from 1990 to now but didn't have any luck.
  9. Couldn't you tell I was kidding Cyber? As a marketing exec I am fully aware of what business can and cannot do. In the community I live in >50,000 many many small businesses are more "morally aware" than their large corporate counterparts. It is all part of their marketing strategies which tend to be much more local than a corp such as WalMart. While WalMart may donate (through head office) to the Red Cross (for example).. the small business' donation goes directly to local community services. Small business owners do more for the community through Rotary, Lions, etc than an absent owner of WalMart (or Zellers, etc). I highly doubt if the owner of WalMart Quesnel actually lives in Quesnel. I highly doubt if any of the shareholders live their either.
  10. You are so having fun White! Of course a business must have a moral conscience. Why do you think WalMart donates to Big Brothers? So, I see that YOU are the five year old. I will remember this in the future and make allowances for you. added: OMG you guys are ganging up on me! You WalMart lovers you! LOL
  11. M Dancer. I don’t mean to disrespect Quesnel. But it is true. I was up there in July and it is shrinking. Businesses closing up… Maple Park Mall has maybe one store… I didn’t go to the west side so maybe West Park is doing well. I was there when it first opened (same with Maple Park, I was 15 yo when it opened) and it was a beautiful little mall. The Alamo Grill just sold for a lousy quarter million. Nobody wanted it so they simply auctioned it off. As far as being a corporate citizen… WalMart does less than a good many small businesses that I work with here in the Lower Mainland. I bet if I were to go to one of the Pulp Mills and ask for a donation it would be a lot larger than the one from Wally World. Cheers!
  12. Morally yes they have an obligation to the community. That is my only point in this entire thread. Thanks Hon!
  13. What on earth is "off the wall" about not wanting (notice it does not say banning!) WalMart to locate in small communities. What is "off the wall" about corporate responsibility. What, exactly, have I said that could be considered "Off the wall"? Besides calling you a five year old..
  14. hey baby. When you insult me you get it right back atcha. Remanufacturing is when they take a log and turn it into a rough beam so that it can be shipped as manufactured wood. Manufacturing is when they take a log and turn it into lumber.
  15. How dumb yah gotta be for jeebus sake! The trees in the surrounding area not the trees in, for example, Stanley Park. Honey, they don't fall trees inside cities for remanufacture. Generally the forest companies will go out into the surrounding woods and take the trees. If I had known I was discussing this with a five year old I would have worded it differently from the beginning. Geez.
  16. T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U Argus! and White, M... I never said anything about lawfully BANNING a corporation. I said they should not locate in small communities. Far cry from BANNING innit?! If everyone loves WalMart so much and it is sooo good for communities -- why do some communities fight tooth and nail to disallow them? Why do hundreds of people turn out to city (or town) council meetings? Are they their to say "Give us WalMart!". No they are not, they are there to stop WalMart from ruining what they consider a prosperous community. As far as corporations having a "duty" to the communities they locate in... take the forest industry. Warehauser, Canfor and the like have a DUTY to the communities they open in. They cannot, for instance, simply take all the trees they fell and sell them -- a portion of those trees MUST be further manufactured in the community. Corporations are not "purely" capitalistic. They have a public responsibility. Or would it be better if we were like Chili or Peru where there are no duties, no responsibility to the communities there.
  17. Yah. You know what I do? I get welfare from the governemt (cause I dunno 'bout capitalizm LOL) and I use it to promote small businesses. The government pays me to help businesses grow./NOT! Corporations have a duty to the communities they decide to locate in. Or do you (never mind of course you do!) think that a company can come into a community, suck it dry and leave with no responsibility to the people it has sucked dry? Like I said, I have nothing against your favourite store. They just should not locate in small communities of under 50,000. That's all. Do employees of WalMart automatically become shareholders? Are all employees of WalMart getting dividend cheques in the mail? added -- who said anything about banning large corporations? Geez get a grip your extreme paranoid tendencies are showing through.
  18. Me thinks some people need to grow up. No doughheads I do not think that businesses should be stuck in a failing market. I make my living from marketing. How successful do you think I would be if I encouraged businesses to stay in a failing marketplace? WalMart is good when it locates in a centre with a large population. Not so good when it kills small town businesses. They do not benefit a local economy in the same way as a small business. The shareholders, CEO's, etc (who DO NOT live or spend thier money in those small communities) are the only ones to truly benefit. Sure they employ *a few* people but it is negligible.
  19. Thanks Buffycat. WalMart sells cheap goods using cheap labour. In the long run they do nothing for a small community except underprice all the competitors forcing them out of business. And the service is terrible. I am willing to pay more for the goods I purchase when the service is good. Quesnel's population is shrinking -- how long before the huge WalMart decides there isn't enough people to support it? How long before they pull out and leave all those *high paid* (LOL) cashiers in a lurch?
  20. Hey I specialize in "propaganda" but there is no way in hell I would relocate just to market WalMart's propaganda! I doubt if their head office is within 5 mins of my house.. I work 35 hours a week at a job I LOOOOVE. I visit clients all day and get paid more than 50G's per year. Waaay better than being tied to some dept store...
  21. I have no "cause" against a big corp. I shop there. They have jeans for my kid at less than $20! They have nothing I would wear though I am not old enough to wear stretchy pants LOL. I did buy a mat the other day... $15. That being said I still stand by my opinion that WalMart should stay out of small communities... Heck Cash Creek can't even have a Tim Hortons because all the coffee shops whined about it. There is no Timmy's between 100 Mile and Chilliwack! Ack I barely survive the drive! Added: Do you know what an Assistant Manager or Manager earns at a retail box store? I was offered "Manager in Training" at Liquidation World and refused it -- they offered me $9.10 per hour -- oh plus bonuses -- big deal. I make way more n' that in marketing... for small business I might add.
  22. Just think of the small business owner -- now instead of employing 4 people (example) he is now working at WalMart for $9 an hour. He no longer pays taxes as a business owner, in fact at his low wage, he probably barely pays any. Really he probably would've moved and opened his business elsewhere, thus deriving a net loss to the community he moved from. WalMart does not participate in the local economy EXCEPT for the employees. The OWNER of WalMart does not shop at the supermarket down the street on Saturday afternoon... as the small business owner more than likely would have. WalMart is bad for small communities. Quesnellians (LOL) who want low priced warehouse goods can travel to Prince George and shop at Costco (or the WalMart there). As it is the WalMart in Quesnel is NOT located downtown and so in inaccessible to anyone without a car anyway (for those of you who think it's better for the "working poor" who live in the downtown core). PS there are very very few busses in Quesnel. By the way the population of downtown is 8,000. Including the surrounding area (miles of rural space including Native reserves, etc.) there are approx. 15,000. I used to live there I am not making this up.
  23. Means you talk out of both sides of your mouth jbg. Either you are a democrat or a republican. Either you are black or white. Either you are with 'em or against 'em. Can't be sittin' on the fence now!
  24. He can't rebutt a topic so he insults the posters. All he has is his opinion developed from the propaganda he eagerly swallows. So everything he types is rote and means nothing. "Muslims baaaaaaaaaaad ... a'cause the guvment told me they are and I beleeve my tee vee is the trooth like the bible". added: People of faith are not protected from insults... too bad your god won't strike me down eh. LOL I slam all faiths equally by the way. They are all shams. Realize it. Get over it. Get on with your life.
  25. I like this one -- "It's never too late to give up your prejudices". So very true for today when the propaganda machine is operating at capacity. It is never too late to read, analyze and THINK for yourself. It is never too late to turn off the propaganda. It is never too late to be a real human being. It is never too late to stop blaming everything on an "enemy'' you know nothing about. It is never too late to look the other person in the eye and apologize for being an ass. It is never too late!
