Why, pray tell, Leafless are you still in this "fake" country? And what exactly makes it a "fake" country as opposed to a "real" country? There are over 230 "countires" on the planet. Which ones are "fake"? PS Banana's don't grow very well here...

The result each time was a majority government. In those elections the Liberals got enough votes to win a majority. That means that the rest of Canadians were split between the other running parties. The Liberals were elected by majority rule -- the other parties split 60%. Now if we only had 2 parties then you would be correct. As it is... we have more than two, thus the majority of the votes went to one party. That's the way it works here in Canada, no mattter how many times you cry "dictatorship!". That is what democracy is all about. What are you on about anyway? Your conservative guy is running the country (with a minority, heh) -- are you folks still on about it being a Liberal dictatorship or have you gotten over that crying jag yet?

US Refuses our Lumber but wants our Water
Drea replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Found this website... Freshwater Only 9%... not much IMO. Here's another interesting one... Fresh Water and another one... World Water Crisis I looked for stats on the amount of fresh water in the USA (a counterpart to the top link -- Canada's) and could not find one. -
The voters vote in a democracy. Tough luck if your "party" isn't the one who wins most often.... pft. Those who espouse "We are a dictatorship! The Liberals have been running the country forever!" are simply mad that the politicians they chose on the ballot were not chosen by the majority. If Canadians want a CPC majority, they will vote for it. If Canadians want a Liberal majority, they will vote for it. Democracy = majority rule. Get over it.

US Refuses our Lumber but wants our Water
Drea replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think it would work only if there were a cap on the amount to be sold/shipped. Once the cap is reached the deal must be renegotiated. And only if the sale does not have any effect on the amount of water accessible to Canadians. In this instance (water) we must look after ourselves first. -
US Refuses our Lumber but wants our Water

As usual you are on about the wrong thing... I meant the money saved BEFORE the derailment. CN tries to save money by adding too many cars to trains (before they derail!). They attempt to have a larger bottom line by having more cars per train. This directly impacts the safety of the train. Too long a train and it derails. and how is this antiAmerican? Hmmmmmmm? -
Where is Mattel's quality control? Have they subcontracted that too? Mattel is ultimately responsible. It uses the cheapest subcontractors available so they can sell their goods competitively. The company in China (not China itself, not the whole entire country) using lead paint is not off the hook but I ask, why did Mattel not know? Why were they not more active in making sure their products were being produced in a safe manner? Do they not randomly check the toys for lead paint etc?

US Refuses our Lumber but wants our Water
Drea replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I understand. If one does not want private enterprise one is automatically anti American. Ok. Whatever. CN bought BC Rail and now there are derailments all over the place. Why? Money. Why is money more important than safety? Because CN is a private corporation now. Nothing matters to private enterprise but the bottom line. -

What are you on about BMax? There is a thread about anti-Americanism but this isn't it. I don't want to see any private corporation in control of our water supply. Whether that corporation be Canadian, American or Chinese. No I don't want to horde all the water for us Canadians but I do want to make sure the supply is protected. IMO that means keeping it out of the hands of private corporations. If we do enter into an agreement to sell it I would hope that we would make sure our needs our met first. If you own a farm and use the food to feed yourself, do you sell ALL your produce or do you keep what you need and sell the surplus? -

No actually I was thinking of private investment from China.... but I don't want American corporations buying it up either. What does my location have to do with the topic? I don't live in Victoria. Once again, you cannot debate the subject at hand so you resort to insulting my location on the map. Ps, just in case you are geographically challenged. British Columbia is a province. It's pretty big. Victoria's sewage (and I agree that it needs to be fixed) does not enter into our watersheds so it has nothing to do with the topic of the fresh water supply. People are funny! Is Ottawa like, the whole frozen Ontario? (oh wait it's TORONTO that thinks it's a province!).. duh LOL One city does not a province make. -

We can protect it by not selling it off to private enterprise. By making sure no (or very limited) logging activity occurs in the watershed. -

Drea replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Anything rational to add to the topic there boys? Got a problem with Canada protecting it's watersheds? Discuss it. But you cannot, so you simply resort to what you know best -- insults. The debating technique of "insult 'em" does nothing for your position on the topic it only makes you look like idiots. -
U.S. healthcare expensive, inefficient

American Woman, this person just does not have the mental capacity to empathize. That's a symptom of inherent psychosis. It's unfortunate but I don't think anything can be done for him. -

And Bangladesh just flooded. Why don't the people simply stick their faces in the water and drink it? It's water after all innit? Because it is not drinkable. There is a lot of water on earth but not all of it is potable. We (Canada) happen to have the world's largest supply of potable fresh water. You can literally stick your face in it and drink. -

Tested? Please enlighten me? Of course the moment you break your back you need emergency care... but what about the long term? Did Christopher Reeve need ongoing care or was his one visit to emergency after his accident fix him all up? I know, and it's quite sad really that you have no morals.... you can get them though... just learn to put yourself in another's shoes... try the shoes of the "uninsured", bet they're very uncomfortable! It could've been a little boy with lukemia. It was simply an example. And obviously you are too thickheaded to get it. Frig, you are even too thick to know how to visualize something different (that's what pretending is) than your own experiences. -

The point is that we need to maintain control of it. The worst thing that we could do is sell it off to the highest bidder (privatize it). I freely drink water from the tap and want to keep it that way for many generations. What would happen if our watersheds were sold off to private companies? Would the private corporation allow logging in the watershed? (they are in it for the money after all) What could us private citizens do if the corporation decided to do this? At least with public ownership we have some semblance of control over it. -

Isn't medicaid a form of insurance paid by your government? AHA! Commie care! What if it were you who went up onto your roof to shovel the snow... and fell off and broke your back (pretend you have no private insurance coverage, like 40 million people in your country) what would you do? I never brought abortion into the debate. The thread is about medical or the lack thereof. Please try to stay on topic. So if your child (you are pretending you are uninsured remember?) gets lukemia you will simply let her die? Your world sucks man... In my world we save stupid homeowners after they fall off roofs, we try to save little girls with MS and lukemia. In my world life is worth more than the dollar. -

So very few people in the US ever suffer heart attacks,... just routine mole removals and the like? Well jeez, all the emergency rooms should be shut down then! What is "high risk" exactly? The little girl with MS... she should be uninsurable and left to die because she was born "high risk"? The roofer who falls off a ladder and breaks his back... he should be uninsured because he is "high risk"? The only people covered by medical in b-c's world are wrapped in bubble wrap and imperfect babies are killed at birth. Lovely world. Good thing it's only in your mind. -

They (America) does not understand the concept of "publicly owned". Just like they don't understand the concept of "crown land" and when they had a problem with our stumpage fees (money paid TO the govt BY the forest companies) they called it a subsidy TO forest companies. The same will happen with our water. Water is the next big commodity and we had better make sure our supply is securely in the hands of Canadians (the lot of us - the "public". ) -
Should Christians Recognize and Participate on Christmas?
Drea replied to betsy's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I have a problem with the use of the word "evil" in this thread. The opposite of good is bad, not evil. Evil is the opposite of saintly. No one is evil but people are bad. No one is saintly but people are good. Jesus (the jury is still out on whether or not he actually existed btw) did try to teach the bad (not evil) people of his era to be nice to one another, to be "good" people (not saintly). -
Bunch of friends were discussing this last night Mattel is an American company yes? Mattel (a toy manufacturing company) subcontracts to Chinese producers yes? If I hire one contractor to build my house and he subcontracts the plumbing to some shoddy outfit, who do I blame? My original contractor for being cheap and hiring the lousy subcontractor or the subcontractor? Of course it is the fault of the original contractor and he is on the hook for the shoddy plumbing regardless of whether or not he did it himself, he hired the guy that messed it up. His fault. IMO Mattel is at fault for hiring a lousy subcontractor.

Envy & Pride - Two of the Seven Cardinal Sins?
Drea replied to August1991's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I think we all suffer from envy at some point. Some may envy another's ability to talk to anyone, while they are too shy. Some may envy another's lot in life, perhaps they had to quit school and work at age 15. That person may envy the college educated. We envy what we don't have (but think we need or want). It's a natural part of who we are. I even think it drives people to do more. Of course it can also drive some people to do nothing (defeatists). -
I finally understand what you are getting at. You went to a store with a hundred dollar bill. The bill probably came from your bank. The store refused to take your hundred. (Many do because of the amount of fake hundreds (and fifties) that were circulating a while back. ) And now you are po'd at Canadian currency and looking to find somewhere that says what you are thinking "Canadian money is worth nothing!" Is this the case? Next time ask the bank teller for twenties. Most money in use today is virtual. When the bank extends a 350,000 dollar loan to you the actual physical money does not end up in your bank's vault waiting for you to pick it up. Only numbers on a screen tell the teller that you have that money in your account - it's real, but it's not physically real.

Cyber, of course good sex isn't the ONLY reason to marry someone. But sexual incompatibility is an important part of a healthy marriage. American Woman, no a man is not a pair of shoes. The shoes I expect to have with me only a couple of years... my relationship with my hubby is supposed to last a lifetime, hence I wanted to know before making the commitment that we would be compatible in ALL ways. I've been with some guys where the sex is great but they are losers and didn't make the cut either . A healthy mix of friendship and good sex make a marrige work.
