The really blatent anti-Americanism started when the US invaded Iraq - I noticed a disturbing change in the public discourse around that time. The same thing happened in almost every democratic country in the world which suggests the change was not caused by something unique to Canada.I know for a fact there was never any outright anti-Americanism in this country until the Liberals started heavy immigration from Islamic countries followed by vocal oppositon mainly from Quebec.
This is exactly the change I noticed around the time the Iraq war started. I agree that being hostile towards an entire country because of the actions of a near lunatic chief executive is not called for. However, Americans should ask themselves, if their foriegn policy can provoke such a reaction in a culturally similar country like Canada then it is should not be surpising how people react in the Islamic world. There is a big difference between dislike of a countries foreign policy and expressing outright animosity and hatred basically based on language and culture.I noticed blatant anti-Americanism when 9/11 happened. Plenty of Canadians and others were saying the U.S. had it coming instead of being sympathetic to a friend in a time of need.

I live and work in B.C. and in the last 2 months I've had 3 companies contact me wondering if I'd like to work for them. The economy in B.C. is humming, I don't need the Fraser Institute to tell me that. Look up any stats from Stats Canada or elsewhere, western Canada is outpacing the east. I know it's good news, but you don't have to choke on it just because it's from the Fraser Institute.

They just permanently cripple them by shooting off their kneecaps (a common practice in northern Ireland) or just shoot them with a rifle. Is rather hypocritical to think that all Muslims should be blamed for the actions of zealots yet you insist that every 'Christian' radical that uses violance is not really a Christian.oh and that other small difference - christians don't saw off people's heads to make a point.Sparhawk, you can't get around the main point, that the Koran teaches its okay to kill infidels and get a heavenly reward, while the Bible teaches that murder is wrong. The Irish were not fighting for eternal reward, but for independence from Great Britian. They did not expect to get 72 virgins for every English soldier they killed.
Muslims expect to get rewarded in Heaven for killing infidels. And this is their current belief, not as the Bible with laws from the old testament that no longer are followed. And you have no answer for how Muslims treat gays, abortionists and pornographers compared to other countries.

I heard about this study on a radio news broadcast this morning and thought it would make a good topic, although I can hear the dissenters already!
This study examined three groups of people: those who had smoked at least 4 joints a week for ten years, for five to ten years, and those who had only smoked 20 joints, and not in the last 2 years.
The results are alarming. The group that had used for over ten years did quite poorly on memory tests as well as decision making tests and learning new information. The 5 to 10 year group were in the middle but were both out performed by the non users. Here's the link:

I think the best course of action is just to avoid substances that damage your brain function. Legalizing this stuff is not a good idea.

Really? Please explain these quotes from Exodus 21:Again, the Muslim religion teaches to kill infidels for heavenly reward. Christianity teaches its wrong to murder for any reason.
Seems to me that killing someone for swearing at his parents is pretty excessive. Of course, you will probably respond with something about how good Christians ignore the parts of the bible that don't make any sense. If you are honest with yourself you will acknowledge that the Christian bible can be perverted to justify evil things just like the Quran can.15 Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death.16 A kidnaper, whether he sells his victim or still has him when caught, shall be put to death.
17 Whoever curses his father or mother shall be put to death.
The same passage goes on to talk about an eye for a eye and a tooth for tooth - the wonderful phrase that can be used to justify almost anything if you believe you have been wronged in some way.
When Christian groups feel they have no other choice to achieve their ends they will kill and justify it with Christian teachings. In the last generation or so those killings have been limited to abortion doctors and about anyone in Northern Ireland. However, the relatively low numbers of religious murders in Christian societies compared to Muslim societies does not make Christianity any better than Islam - 2000 years of bloody history prove otherwise.
If you want to explain why so many Muslims today seem to be willing to resort to violence today then you must look for explanations other than religion. The primary cause of the violence is a deep seated resentment towards the wealth and power of the 'western' societies. This resentment would likely be there no matter what the 'west' did because the backward nature of Muslim societies is not the fault of the west, Rather, it has been largely caused by Muslims refusing to learn from their neighbors like many other cultures (e.g. the Japanese) have done/are doing. That said, American foreign policy during the last 50 years has certainly made a bad situation worse.
I'd be happy to explain those verses from Exodus. Those were the laws the Jews lived by in somewhere around 2000 B.C. Those laws were replaced a long time ago. They don't sacrifice animals anymore either. In the New Testament, Jesus refers to the eye for an eye teaching and responds that his followers should offer the other cheek when one side of their face gets slapped instead. Even then, however, those old teachings did not promise 72 virgins in heaven for killing. They were capital punishment laws, which are still in place in many parts of the world, including Muslim ones, which also have current laws that order the cutting off the hand of a thief.
As for Ireland, again, they were not killing in obedience to biblical teaching that promised rewards in heaven. Just more garden variety hatred and racism.
Muslims are free to kill infidels because their religion teaches it. Resenment of Western countries or refusing to learn from their neighbors is a direct result of their religion! On other threads we talk about abortion, gay issues and porn. Any guess what their governments do to abortion docs, gays and pornographers in Muslim countries? In Canada and the U.S., which you seem to think is Christian, the government does nothing.
-
There is an element here who are getting defensive about porn. There are very CLEAR laws about porn in Canada and you have no need to worry. But it appears some of you are almost reluctant to condemn child porn out of fear one day adult porn may be taken off the menu. Why are you worrying about this when our porn laws have been going the opposite way since porn has been allowed? It's okay to condemn kiddie porn and hope the guilty get sentences!!
But this case is not about child porn so much is it is about child RAPE. Anyone who rapes an 18 month old baby needs to be punished severely as a deterent to others who would grab a kid off the street. I can't understand why there is so much concern about the criminal and so little about the victims.

Uh, show me what christian org has access to smart bombs. The U.S. gov is not a Christian organizaiton, Focus on the Family is. I hope you are not so niave to think that just because Bush, a Christian, is president that it makes the entire government somehow 'Christian'. There are no nations that have God as the deity leader.
Again, the Muslim religion teaches to kill infidels for heavenly reward. Christianity teaches its wrong to murder for any reason. If you won't admit this is true, Sparhawk, it doesn't lessen the truth of it.

Jeezus H, our PM has been doing the same thing lately!! Did KKKarl Rove move to Canada to escape prosecution and find a job with Stephen Harper's government?
"Jeezus H". You can't be serious, you discredit yourself further.
Do you have any examples of such arguments from Harper, or are you expecting us to just take your word for it?
No, no Geoffrey, you don't get it. It was in the MEDIA, see? That means it has to be true. And since they keep musing in the MEDIA that Harper is as far right as that wing nut Bush, then logic would dictate that Harper does pretty much the same things as Bush. It's sooo cleeaarrrr.
Hey hatrick, here's a challenge for you: find a story in the media that says Bush likes to bark like a dog, then start several threads with slightly varying titles to give the impression of differing topics. Extra marks for pictures.

People sure have short memories. The U.S. is not 'suffering' from out spending the Soviets in the cold war, the U.S. deficit is a direct result of 9/11 when they were going through a recession and then got clobbered with the planes. There was wide spread fear and their economy almost went into a depression. That is why they lowered the interest rate again and again to the point of 40 and 50 year record lows. The only thing they could do was spend their way out of it. The sliding U.S. dollar is also a result of it and their economy may never eclipse its former highs.
As to the U.S. being world cops, they are fading in impact. North Korea taunts them. Iran rattles sabres. China ignores them and damages the U.S. economy by pirating consumer products and reverse engineering technology. The U.S. is on the wane and the barbarians are at the gates just like in Roman times. And the barbarians will not give a rip about human rights or silly things like free speech.

No one has been able to fault my assertion that the Muslim religion sanctions the killing of 'infidels' as good and worthy of a reward whereas the Christian faith has no such teaching.
Back in the day the Christians and non Christians BOTH took a pretty dim view of witchcraft and were both guilty of killing them. But again, the Bible does not teach it's okay to kill anyone period. Murder is one of the 10 commandments.
Some of you seem stuck in comparing nations that are christian vs muslim. Serbians were not killing Croatians (or whomever) as obedience to the bible to get a holy reward. I'm afraid it was just garden variety hatred and racism. Muslims, on the other hand kill for holy reward.
But this is not about nations at war. This is about the religion of Islam teaching to kill people you consider infidels. The Christian teaching, on the other hand is to love the infidels. Pretty BIG difference.
BTW, what Christian extremists were killing in Uganda? Show me proof that any Christian extremists are doing any violence to get a heavenly reward as Muslims do.
-
What you'll hear from the left is that someone who shoots an abortion doctor is the same as someone strapping a bomb on their back and blowing up a whole bus of innocents. I don't know how they can make these comparisons with a straight face, but they do. Never mind that the frequency of violent acts from Muslims far outpaces that of christian wackos.
IMO there are nutjobs in all religions that soil the reputation of that particular group, but the Muslim religion is the only one I know of that says its okay to kill an infidel. No other religion I can think of is cool with that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My opinion is that you've been reading too much from the black helicopter crowd. It was inevitable that 9/11 would become fodder for conspiracy theorists, but just because there isn't enough info and data on the event to satisfy and quash all imaginations, it doesn't automatically mean there are hidden causes/enemies yet to be discovered.

Women want to use this drug because anti-abortion flacks make it difficult to seek an abortion at a safe clinic. So if people die from this drug the anti-abortionists deserve a big piece of the blame.Apparently there is no absolute proof in these cases that the women got the infection from the drug, but since its introduction, women have been occasionally dying. Really weird. They pulled Vioxx on much less results. How many women have to die?Uh, nice try but if people are dying from taking an unsafe drug then the drug maker and the governing body that okayed it are to blame. Besides, haven't you heard, it's easy to get an abortion.
That they don't pull it from the market has political overtones if you ask me. The rabid pro-abortionists are no doubt campaigning hard to keep this questionable drug out there in the face of these health issues.

Here's an alarming report, except for the fact that reports like this seem to be downplayed or stuffed somewhere in the back of the paper
www.breitbart.com/news/2006/03/17/D8GDJL302.html
Two women have recently died while on the abortion drug RU 486. The FDA has now warned doctors to watch for a blood infection for those on this drug.(Watch for a blood infection? How 'bout pull the dangerous drug off the market.) This follows a cluster of 4 deaths in California for a total of six. Apparently, administrators of this drug have been directing women to take the pills in a method not presribed by the drug maker. Weird that they would just make up their own method and ignore the recommended one.
Apparently there is no absolute proof in these cases that the women got the infection from the drug, but since its introduction, women have been occasionally dying. Really weird. They pulled Vioxx on much less results. How many women have to die?

There are so many ironies and hypocritical stances in this issue it makes me wince. In the U.S. ( since we're discussing Roe v. Wade), if a teenage girl gets sick during school, the school nurse can not so much as administer an aspirin without parent's permission. If said girl on the other hand wants an abortion, it can be secretly performed, on girls as young as 13, without any word from the parents.
If a woman is murdered and she was pregnant, the killer can be charged with 2 counts of murder, since the fetus is considered a life. Yet the same mother can abort right up to full term, and it's considered just a blob of tissue.
Something is wrong with this picture.
Oh, and Gerry? You sound like a member of the Nazi party of Germany in the '30s.

I have to say I am uncomfortable with the following -I guess we allk know that the U.S. Justice Department has gone to court to get access to Google search records to help prevent access to online pornography
While I of course have no issue and completely support the effort to stop those that prey on children, I wonder if this isn't more of a religious hunt on pornography in general? I wonder what the parameters are around "preventing access to online pornography"
This sicko had live broadcasting as he raped infants and you suspect a religious hunt? Good grief man, child porn is illegal and it has nothing to do with what the church thinks about it.

Oh look, it's gerryhatrick with a new thread, this time attacking Harper! Wow, a new leaf turned over indeed.
Maybe next time you could wait until you have an actual new topic to flail, not just a new way to bring up the same old subject of WHERE THE HELL ARE THE PRISONERS GOING TO?
-
It seems that more than a few Muslim leaders are calling for a stop to the violence, and the protests, and the intolerance, and just about all the things that everyone is complaining about.
I wonder if these "nice" Muslims would be as nice if they had as many WMDs as Russia, the USA or China?
You know, I think there IS a God.
Hold that thought, Biblio, Iran's nutjob president just might turn the trick of getting nukes. God gives us the freedom to live as we choose, and then live with our decisions, which is a pretty just outcome if you ask me. All it takes for evil to suceed is for good men to decide to do nothing.
-
Oh no, bad polls. Who cares? Real leaders don't govern by polls. As for Republican successors, I like McCain, Romney and Guilliani. I'd like to see a combination of two of the three in the White House in 2008.
I notice you didn't mention the secret weapon to Bubba's wife, Condi. She's smarter and has been getting a wealth of experience in her various portfolios, unlike Hillary, who was merely married to the boss.
Dear Newbie, what gives? You start 2 threads within 2 minutes last night, both pretty much on the same topic. We get it already, you hate Bush.
-
Haven't you ever heard you can't yell 'fire' in a public place? Of course there are limits on freedom of speech.
I believe you can tell this pig cartoon is much worse than the Muslim ones, but you enjoy playing devil's advocate. I think you enjoy the debating more than the outcome. And don't get me wrong, you're pretty good at it. But I see no point in just debating for the sake of debating. Nothing personal.
-
Come on, BD, making fun of is one thing but this particular cartoon is disgusting. You can make fun of Christianity all you want, be my guest. This is far beyond that.
-
What the MSM is doing in regards to Islam in general is pure propaganda. Mark Steyn and others are the only ones willing to face the truth and tell it like it is. For those who can't handle threads like this and think Jerry is a hate monger, here's a line for you that's been used on us conservatives for years: You can always change the channel!

Black dog, only you would think that a Jewish kid saying he wishes all Palestinians would go live in some other Arab country is comparable to a Palestinian kid saying committing murder against an Israeli would make him feel glad and strong. I don't know why you can't see the difference between the two.
At any rate, the teacher's been reinstated:
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3589992
It seems disciplinary action was taken against the teacher, although he never lost any of his salary while he was on leave. An official said the lecture in question was a breach of district policy since the teacher didn't present both sides of arguments.
The student in question said, "I never wanted him fired. I just wanted hm to go back to teaching geography. Hopefully he won't be teqching the things he previously taught."
I'll repeat what I said earlier. You can bet the teacher will be more careful in the future, stupid things like Hitler comparisons will not be made anymore. Maybe he'll spend most of class time teaching the geography material, who knows. And relations between the teacher and pupil will be a little strained. Someone should keep an eye on that little neo-con's marks, if the teacher is small minded, they might take a dive.
-
Another good point made: Those little socialists or whatever they are wouldn't print the Mohammad cartoons because they didn't want to offend anyone. For them to be unable to see that this would be offensive is unrealistic. They knew it would offend. They just didn't care. This happened on March 3, was it? The response of the Christian community shows who's more scary, namely, the Muslim community. Christians aren't burning buildings, flags and people, for instance.

No, you should simply compare the actions of followers of the Muslim faith regarding murder in comparison with actions of Christians in regards to murder. Apparently you are unable to do that.
Why don't you bring up Sampson, Saul, Jacob, Isau, and dozens of others. The bible is full of people who made mistakes and screwed up. It still doesn't change the bible's teaching on murder vs the Koran, whether you know it or not.
