Danielle Smith Address to Albertans
Aristides replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No but I did live there for six years and have a lot of time for Albertans in general and sympathy for some of their complaints. My opinion of Smith stands. -
Cheese: Why no choice? So expensive!

The Canadian system is user pay instead of taxpayer subsidies. -
Trump has been forcing legal companies to bend the knee over threats of retaliation. This shouldn't surprise anyone. Of course MAGA's will respond with made up whatabouts. https://www.reuters.com/legal/former-top-lawyers-major-companies-decry-trump-orders-against-law-firms-2025-04-08/ https://apnews.com/article/trump-law-firms-executive-order-fe8f38a61cf77c5bb6add1315f5f96f1 https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-orders-target-law-firms-some-lawyers-say-that-threatens-rule-of-law-60-minutes-transcript/

Danielle Smith Address to Albertans
Aristides replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It was realistic and fair before. It was set by Kenny. Why would she change it if she doesn't want it to happen. Lowering the bar just means we can expect endless referendums. We already know from Quebec that a no vote just means until next time to separatists. -

She has cut in half the number of signatures required to trigger a referendum and doubled time allowed to raise them. How is that not advocating for sovereignty? -
Trump is always playing to his base, Carney knows his responsibility is to Canadians. Getting into a public pissing match with Trump over his lies won't help a long game which will be done behind closed doors by serious people. The only curb on Trump will be reality, not calling him out on his bullshit. Being the adult in the room is a good thing.

Danielle Smith Address to Albertans

Not when she is intentionally making it difficult for Carney to deal with the US. Alberta is still part of Canada no matter what Smith wants. I don't have a problem with her sticking up for Alberta but maybe wait and see what Carney does before she starts making ultimatums while he is dealing with the greatest threat to this country in 200 years. What's her plan if Albertans do vote to separate, they don't know what they want because their only realistic option would be to join the US and who in their right mind would want to join that shit show. How much influence would a state of 4 million people have in a country of more tha 330 million? A lot less than they do now. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-one-in-four-people-in-alberta-identify-as-albertans-first-canadians/ -

For someone who says she isn't a separatist she sure talks and acts like one. Coming out with this the day before Carney's meeting with Trump says she doesn't give a shit about Canada. -

Let me put it this way. The USD is down against every major currency which is good for US exports but makes imports more expensive, plus the tariffs on top of that. The Canadian dollar is up 5% against the USD since February in spite of the Canadian 5 yr bond paying only 2.8% vs the US 5 yr paying 4.3%. Higher interest rates makes debt more expensive to service, including government debt. That in itself is inflationary.

The biggest influence on markets are big institutional investors, pension plans etc. They don't "play" the market. The sell off is because they don't like what they see coming. Some of it will also be short sellers having to cover their losses. I also look for dividends but if a stock drops 10% and pays a 4% dividend, after tax it will take three years to break even if the stock doesn't recover.

Smith pulling this the day before Trump and Carney meet is pure sabotage. Sometimes I think she makes sense and other times it's WTF is the matter with you. This is the latter in a big way. She really is a PoS. -
