  1. Good point. If Layton is serious about sticking a knife through the heart of the Liberals he will edge slightly towards the centre if anything.

Why shouldn't the NDP engage the Liberals for all left of centre voters?

The policy in the OP will pearpetuate the NDP being locked out of power. If the NDP engages the Liberals, they just might win. Then they could (maybe one day) form government, yikes...

Canada is center-left. So why move farther from the center? IMO moving farther from the center they will not gain them votes, rather just the opposite.
  2. Wasn't "adopting and improving on" Reform/Alliance ideas what won Chretien a dozen years in office???

What in the article pointed to Harper paying off Quebec in any way? I don't see the rumours of a potential floor-crossing or two being linked to a payoff.

Of the many Liberal ideas that Harper adopts and improves on, it appears we will soon be able to add 'paying off Quebec'.

I apologize for my cynicism. If the end result is national unity, I guess I can't complain.

  3. Wells is an interesting character.

Sometimes he is dead on, like in the post above.

Then he posts the name of every Ministerial Chief of Staff and Director of Communications, with phone numbers, on his blog to prove a point.

Sorta strange those two acts coming from the same person.

Either you aren't going to get into the gutter over this battle or you are.

  4. Because Temagami Scourge has repeatedly tried to get a rise out of people, continually breaks the rules of the forum and nothing is being done to stop his behaviour...

Enough with the condescending remarks. This thread has dissolved into nothing more than pathetic race-baiting and I've had enough of it.

Everyone needs to sit back, take a deep breath and move on.

  5. You are ignorant and rude. Yet somehow allowed to get away with breaking the rules of the forum.

Hmmm, you don't like what I say so it justifies being so childish and petty? Wow, must be a beautiful world that you live in.

(btw how exactly did I misrepresent what you said?)

Yep. You decided to misrepresent half of what I said, and then ignored the rest. That pisses me off, so I gave you a written bitch-slap.

If it hurt that much, then I'm sorry for hurting your feelings and I won't do it again. However, I expect the same standard from you, so make my quotes contextual and I'd gladly debate with you. Until you learn proper written presentation, don't be surprised if people get pissed at you.

  6. Don Martin said it best.

In the end, when or if the parliamentary committee vetting of appointments returns under a Harper minority or majority government, no blue-chip business leaders will apply.

Only the lowest common denominator of applicant, those without political involvement or the slightest hint of free-thinking public commentary, will pass the MP smell test.

    This is quite sad.

But the Liberals definitely got their way. *If* they ever form government again they won't have to worry about their appointments being scrutinized. Too bad the NDP and the Bloc fell for their little game...

  7. There are a few problems here temagami.

    1. We shouldn't stereotype people who collect welfare. Are all of them lazy? No. However, you make the mistake of going to far to understand. *under no circumstances* are they lazy? Hmmm, then *under no circumstances* they should have to leave welfare, to follow your argument to its logical conclusion. (Oh wait, you were only talking about a specific case. But Morgan was only using a story about ants...)

    2. Why would you call Gwyn Morgan my *good buddy*? Does that somehow strengthen your argument? Make me a bad person? You are making the same mistake Naci Sey made. Morgan used a story, but you extrapolated that he was calling somebody in your very specific case lazy because of your random story.

    3. Do you even understand the role Morgan was asked to play? How many welfare moms are being nominated for government appointments?

Sadly for the left, the opposition used their limited power too quickly and too harshly. This was a bad move for Canada, but will ultimately be a good thing as it makes it that much more likely the Conservatives will win a majority next year.

Do you think this woman wants to be on welfare? How do we find the deadbeat if he takes off and simply doesn't leave a forwarding address? What if the deadbeat decides to quit his job before he pays a penny to the ex? We pay for all these people, but under no circumstances would I call that woman lazy.

However, your good buddy Gwyn Morgan did in a heartbeat.

Good CEO or not, an idiot who can so easily paint entire groups as social evils does not deserve to seat in a seat where he may have to render a judgement where a welfare mom or a Jamaican is a principle figure, and we already know how much he scorns these two groups. It makes it much easier to say that you have to look and act like him to get a successful judgement. Government and business are two separate animals, and Morgan is finding that out now.

  8. Because *you* extend Morgan's story to Jamaican immigrants the Canadian people should be deprived of having one of the country's premier ex-CEOs chairing a committee that vets public appointments???

So not only are Toronto's crime problems due largely to Jamaican immigrants, the country's problems are due largely to people in poverty. Every person in poverty is lazy and is justified in blaming only laziness as the cause of their situation.
  9. The irony of this vote is how any Liberal MP could vote for the motion.

The Liberals paid lip service to Kyoto but didn't do much to actually meet the targets. Oh, excuse me there was the "One-ton challenge". Whatever...

Calling this a "major defeat" is a little bit of hyperbole.

I would love to see a detailed plan of what would need to be done for Canada to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to this level.

I think it would open the eyes of many Canadians.

  10. Yup. That's a dumbass move for sure.

While it helps the NDP and the Libs with their base on the left, it hurts withcentrist voters.

Helps the Conservatives with their base and swing-centre voters. Accountability will definitely be an issue in the next election.

I knew we were in for an election sooner rather than later, but with moves like that the opposition just might force Harper's hand for a fall election.

  11. The decay of federalism and democracy caused by Quebec hyper pandering primarily by a string of Liberal prime ministers including a Quebec Conservative one under the guise of the quest for 'unity', Quebec style that is.

We already covered this and I know you have a hard time grasping the situation.

I have a hard time *grasping* the situation because you through out terms like the "decay of federalism" without any support. We haven't *covered* an issue just because you said it is so. Provide some support. Do you have one actual example of this "decay"?

You have already stated 'official bilingualism is "a fact of life" and you are learning French to advance your career as a federal public servant, if you are one that is.

Aren't you being a little hypocritical by voluntarily succumbing to OLA standards and then stating " I do not agree with the OLA?

It's hypocritical to prepare myself for the possibility of using French in the future?

Believe it or not, there are jobs outside the Canadian federal service that require French. Have you ever thought that might be why I am studying French?

  12. Funny how that never applied to the Liberals as they constantly ignored the west for not voting for them...

Patience. Radical change cannot happen overnight. Politicians that try are usually eviscerated by the special interests they take on. Furthermore, many Canadians simply do not want the radical downsizing of gov't that some on the right want. Harper must take these views into account because he is now the leader of all Canadians and not just the 30-35% that voted for him.
  13. Come on. Let's not be crazy. Rae may not be that popular with many Ontarians, but he could still win a seat in Parliament.

Remember Toronto is still pretty Liberal red.

Two ridings quickly come to mind as easily winnable for Rae. York South-Weston and Beaches-East York. He definitely represented parts of York South-Weston in the past and I *think* parts of Beaches-East York. Maria Minna (current MP for Beaches-East York) has been around for a long time so might step aside easily. Who knows about Alan Tonks (MP for York South-Weston)? The riding is a better fit for Rae, but there is some bad blood. (Rae beat Tonks in 1987 provincially.)

There are many other ridings Rae could win in...

Firstly I doubt if Rae would be chosen leader of the Liberals.

But if by change it did happen, I doubt there is anywhere in Ontario where Bobbo could get enough votes to represent anyone as an MP.

Maybe this could be Belinda's out by being the ultimate martyr of the Liberals and give up her seat.

Where would Rae get enough votes to go to Ottawa?

  14. That's why this story has absolutely no legs.

I saw it mentioned on QP yesterday. That is the only reference of any kind I have come across in any English-language media. If it had any possibility of becoming a real story that could hurt the Conservatives wouldn't the Liberals (or the CBC  ) have picked it up?

Chretien missed the King of Jordan's funeral because he was too busy skiing and nobody batted an eye. It says a lot that the Quebecers are now hyperventilating about two members of the vaunted Francophonie not being treated like they have the keys to the country.
  15. It's interesting looking at the two examples you gave. I'm guessing you are talking about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" that Clinton instituted. Very interesting how Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservative Government allowed homosexuals to serve openly in 1992, yet Clinton's half-arsed policy makes him a darling of the Canadian left. Bush's stem cell policy is actual more *liberal* than Clinton;s. I didn't believe it until I read this.

Don't get me wrong, I think Clinton was a very good President. But I also think that Mulroney was a very good Prime Minister.

Clinton's efforts regarding the gay issue and stem cell research are but a couple of reasons why the Canadian right found him to be a lefty.
  16. What is the seriousness of the situation?

I have said over and over that I do not agree with the OLA. However, there are far more things to get upset about.

White wine associates  Is that some sorta silver-spoon socialist accusation?

    You gotta love this board.

Maybe you have different types of associates than I do of the 'white wine type' which of course there's nothing the matter or wrong with that.
  17. Those things shouldn't be easy. Neither should changing the constitution.

If they really need to be changed there should be not only the political will for change, but also agreement on what would better take its place. Unfortunately, we don't have that agreement yet, on Senate reform for example, so the change is not forthcoming.

I would dispute that simple housecleaning is enough. An election is an effiective way to change the personel involved but doesn't change the structure or power. Sometimes a more radical approach is required. Suppose we wanted to eliminate the senate, or change the federal/provincial power balance. It is not very easy in our current democratic system.
  18. Diouf being *searched* is a gross overstatement of what happened.

I think Sandra Buckler said it best that "there were no latex gloves involved" or something to that effect.

None of these *incidents* are serious. Over even indicative of any overall pattern. More sad attempts at creating controversy by the Liberals.

Read these bits in the context of the 'snub' of McGuinty and the first meeting with Charest.

It seems to me that Harper seriously dislikes useless photo-ops. If I'm right, then I wonder if it's personal taste or if, perhaps, he subscribes to the notion that less is more, ie. staying out of people's faces will do more for his image than being shown glad-handing all the time.
