  2. While I often want to try something different, that doesn't really entice me. Waffle cone all the way. Ice cream was a problem for me when the kids were young, summers we would do about a weekly trip to the DQ or Baskin Robins. That is one of my vices I have been able to forgo after they grew up, I think the last time I had ice cream was Christmas.
  3. Returning to the submarine subthread. The German type 212 fuel cell submarine has already had 14 & 18 day submerged (ie. no snorkelling) runs, and it is 90's technology. You would expect that 20 years later we could build even more capable non-nuclear submarines for use under the arctic ice. An interesting note is that some of the first production British submarines were built in Montreal over a century ago. Like all our military manufacturing capabilities, we have lost that.
  4. The link you posted has a table, is that what you mean by 'graph'? The left side is GDP, and the right side is Military Spending. If you note, the right side has the 'rank' column with the entry for Canada listed at 127, but the right side is sorted by absolute spending ($US assumed) and Canada is the 20'th entry down on that side.

You don't take a budget for an entire department over 15 years, inflate it up by a billion or so, and then say that is what it cost to do one task. That is a lie, pure and simple. Ok, so it cost whatever to legalize and maintain the regulations. What do you think it costs to criminalize and maintain the current regulations? I suggest it is significantly more by at least an order of magnitude, but regardless of whatever estimate you come up with the current system has to cost more.

If you add up the many billions we spend on the Canadian Forces, RCMP, CSIS, Coast Guard, Border Security, and countless other organizations involved in defending Canada, that is a sizable insurance premium we are already paying. I have seen little call for it to be reduced, just a great loud shouting to increase it.
  11. Not quite sure what your statement above means. I looked at your source, and it shows that we rank as 15th in terms of 2011 GDP, 20th in terms of absolute 2007 military spending, and since that 2007 spending was 1.1% of our 2011 GDP then we are 127th in terms of spending as a percent of GDP (sort of).

In fact many Christian slave owners used to cite: Ephesians 6:5-9 - Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. I sense an argument coming on about interpreting instead of taking the Bible literally.

As TimG correctly points out, this could have been a one-way venture. A civilization having the technology does not mean that the voyagers (note I don't use the term explorers) themselves had the means in the new land, and perhaps the desire, to fashion a return craft. If you were cast adrift for many weeks/months on the stormy seas, would you want turn around and go back out without a clue how to return safely? Of course non of this means it happened, just that it is possible.
  15. Actually your original reference (1 Corinthians 6:9) is from the English Standard Version. If you want to quote the NIV then you should quote it properly. Also note which revision of the NIV you are quoting (1966, 1984, or 2011) because that passage is different in each of them.

All nordic countries have substantially higher government revenue than Canada, but it is true that Norway and Finland do have lower health care spending. Note that government spending on higher education indirectly offsets health care spending, I know that makes a big difference in the case of France but I haven't looked closely at the nordic countries. The other high cost to health care in Canada is our geography.

I don't see μαλακοῖ or a derivative of that root word appearing there, which was the point of your original translation being wrong. If you want to prove that the Bible is goodness or hate, depending on the human author and their mood at the time, then that is a completely different matter.

Yes, concrete naturally has great compressive strength but that doesn't help too much if you want to build great spans across wide rivers, and many of the other engineering challenges of today that were never conceived 2000 years ago. Perhaps a technology thread on ancient vs modern construction. Many tangents here. Higher education, preparation for higher education, the teaching vs. the research professor, etc. Yes, there are many examples of people with little education that have changed the world. There are plenty more examples of people with lots of education that also changed the world. Yes, you can teach yourself nuclear physics or brain surgery but most of those leading in those and other fields have extensive education credentials. Perhaps a thread on the benefits of education both formal and informal.

  23. True, but there are also jobs that pay a lot less than soldiering and involve a lot higher risk. Loggers, fishing and trapping, farming, mining and quarrying, transportation, etc. Additionally, most soldiers are not battlefield soldiers and those that are don't spend most of their career there. I agree we have done a poor job equipping our soldiers for the battles we have sent them in, but the bigger problem is we should not have been in Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Iraq, etc. We need to focus our resources properly.

  25. So your translation of the Bible is clear. Your translation done by who? How about the King James Bible: Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind How about we go back to the original verse that used the term malakoi? Who are you to say that means homosexual, or even effeminate? It is translated differently in other parts of the King James BIble (Matthew 11:8, and Luke 7:25). It appears the meaning of the word is: men not working or advancing ideas so as to concern themselves with love only, not working for the good of the whole. The clarity you speak of is anything but.
