  1. Why do people have to be 'exactly like us' before you'll deem them worthy of respect, compassion or humanitarian aid?
  2. How is pointing out that our actions have consequences also saying that "all this terrorism and influx of refugees is our fault"? If someone were travelling on icy roads and landed in the ditch, would you say the accident was "entirely his fault" because he was driving a little too fast? Or would you recognize that without one or the other, the accident may well not have happened? It is possible to recognize all factors in creating a situation. The unwillingness of some people to recognize our own responsibility in being part of the reason we have refugees astounds me, especially since so many of them are on the 'right', and the 'right' constantly complains about people 'not taking responsibility'. If our government and other Western nations had never engaged in any military action in any Middle Eastern country, or any kind of political manipulation, perhaps then there'd be justification for believing we're innocent of any responsibility for the current situation. But we played, along with everyone else, and now we're paying.
  3. Ran across a blog written by a former Bell contact worker. Crappy company to work for and while they may be willing to listen to someone with mental illness, they sure don't do anything to help them deal with it. But seems that there have been suicides in the family who owns or founded Bell so they want to get the word out, even as the corporation completely misses the point when it comes to their own employees.
  4. Rather a simplistic response, and I'm disappointed in you. People who are raised with certain belief systems, religious or otherwise don't really "choose" it, and they rarely find it easy to "leave" for any reason. I think it was some Catholic cleric who said "Give me a boy till he is five years old, and he is mine for life." As for your sly reference to laws against apostasy, none of those are based on Quranic writing. Those are secular laws, so blame the governments and clerics who impose and uphold them, not the religion, and recognize that not every single Muslim is going to believe or follow that particular law.
  5. Sure, I can agree with that. For example, the Bible is pretty patriarchal, and the more fundamental Chrisrian sects may well encourage male entitlement to sex from wives and to disrespect women who do not share their definition of female behavior and modesty. In Islam, men who are raised with the Quranic instructions to respect and honor women and to show tolerance for those of different beliefs and behavior will behave differently than men raised to believe that women are less than men. I do not think either Islam or Christianity supports rape. In terms of a patriarchal society, it's true that women will also support that. So its more complex than having a bunch of misogynistic men out raping and pillaging just cause they're Muslim.
  6. Men are the main perpetrators of sexual violence against women and each other, all over the world. In every country/culture/group, there are wide differences in individuals, from men who would never step over any line when it comes to sexual contact to men who'll keep women prisoner for years, rape and murderthem . In between those extremes are men who make suggestive/lewd comments, playfully slap a woman's ass as she walks by, rub up or touch her in a crowd, stand beneath a staircase to watch them walk up, install mirrors/cameras in bathrooms/change rooms/hotel rooms, expose themselves to strangers, push for sex on a date, shrug it off, sulk, threaten or become violent when turned down; use GHB to obtain consent, or take advantage of a girl who's passed out. Some research suggests that 30% of men in the "civilized" west are willing to coerce sex to some degree, especially if they think they wouldn't get caught. Are men from more patriarchal societies more sexually violent than men from less patriarchal society? Other than the recent prevalence of lurid headlines, I haven't really seen any proof of that. The way in which men indulge in sexual violence may differ slightly between "here" and "there", but unless there is some hard data demonstrating a significant difference, I take those headlines to be simply headlines that prove nothing about any man in any particular group. It's pretty hard to condemn "Islam" as a whole because some Middle-Eastern/North African men made headlines in Germany, and shrug off our Western boys who find GHB so handy while out on the town, women are warned to never leave their drinks unattended for fear someone will add something. Yeah, men's behavior varies, and many things can determine just how any individual man learns to relate to women. Nonetheless, as a group, men are dangerous to women regardless of color or creed. There's just no avoiding that conclusion.
  7. Perhaps I wasn't clear. You posted links to articles in which some Muslim clerics/imams sought to blame the women for being harassed, focusing on what they wear, and suggesting that alcohol was a contributing factor. In Canada, if a girl complains of being assaulted, what she wears and does is examined by social commentators, friends, acquaintances, strangers. Was she dressed provocatively, was she behaving flirtatiously, was she somewhere where 'good girls' don't go, was she drinking? If the answer to any of those questions is "yes", she is held to be at least partly responsible for what happened to her. As long as the guy is white, that is. Apparently, if it's a non-White man who assaults her it's because he's from an uncivilized religion that treats women poorly. And yeah, we do have law in this country, and 'she was dressed provocatively isn't a defense. Nonetheless, the social attitudes that women are somehow responsible for men's behavior is still prevalent in the West is still reflected in our courts, so that very few men are convicted of sexual assault. Have you ever heard news stories of parties where some girl gets drunk (or is given some drug), passes out and several of the males take advantage of the situation? Sometimes it's men who take advantage of an unexpected situation, sometimes it's planned. What is that but a 'sex assault mob'? Men are men all over the world. The laws we enjoy against sexual assault definitely help keep Canadian men from thinking they can take advantage, but it doesn't stop all of them. Those same laws will also apply to non-white refugees.
  8. Shooting at gun shop. Appears customers were not happy about $25 charge. 17-year-old dead. http://globalnews.ca/news/2474289/sheriff-gun-shop-shootout-over-25-kills-2-wounds-2/?hootPostID=fb90bc969af7c962aac649f294d8cb02

I guess when you take extreme paranoia and throw in lots of guns, these things are what you get.

  9. According to the volunteer information session held by Immigrant Services Society of BC that I attended yesterday, many Syrians have a second language of either French or English. Two of the volunteer positions available involve increasing the refugees English-language skills. There is also an ISS sponsored language school and services to help them find a job. Most refugees arrive in Canada owing the government thousands of dollars for flights and services; their repayment rate is the highest of any group in Canada, at 91%. Since welfare barely pays enough to mange rent and groceries, I imagine this high repayment rate is because refugees do work. ISS did not address cell phone ownership, but if you are concerned, you could call them or a similar organization in your area. Here's a link: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomers/map/services.asp For those who are worried about ultra-conservative Muslim men arriving in Canada with 'misogynistic' attitudes,, I suggest you volunteer to assist in resettling activities. You could be a key element in ensuring that they learn what kind of behavior is acceptable in Canada when it comes to women; heck, you could even be the reason someone isn't harassed or assaulted, at least by a refugee.
  10. We'll need a lot more police to protect us from all the refugees. I admit, I don't understand why we spend so much on politicians, but rely on volunteers for rescue work and firefighting in many communities.
  11. Last year, 44 Americans were shot by Muslim Terrorists. By comparison, 52 Americans were shot by toddlers. Which raises the question, why isn't more being done to protect us from toddlers? Think about it. They don't share our values, they barely speak English, they steal our welfare. They have no marketable skills, they're prone to angry outbursts. Worst of all? They aren't even Christian. We need to learn from the US Experience, and not let these dangerous, freeload...

  12. Seriously? In this country, our oh-so-civilized Canada, women who accuse men of sexual assault are closely examined as to conduct, dress and location at the time of the alleged assault. If alcohol is involved, it's a defense for the man, and a conviction for the woman. Women are often assumed to be lying, or to be suffering from 'regret' after a consensual sexual act. Ultimately something like 1% of sexual assault charges brought ever end up in conviction, implying that 99% of victims aren't really victims. This is so well known that many women don't even bother reporting assaults, because of the automatic censure they receive. And you somehow think that some people from another culture saying EXACTLY what some people from this culture say 'proves' anything at all?
  13. This morning on the news, I heard about several separate sexual assaults over the last few days. Oddly, the perpetrators were not identified as being 'Middle Eastern" or "African", merely men. Obviously, this proves that men everywhere in Canada are rapists and women need protection! The notion that somehow things are going to get 'worse' for women in Canada because a few thousand Middle Eastern men come here is laughable. You so concerned about the welfare of women, how about advancing the notion that ALL MEN in Canada be chemically castrated: after all, a FEW MEN in this population have assaulted and raped women, so ALL MEN should pay the price, eh? Start with you? What happened in Germany was horrific; even other MALE SYRIAN REFUGEES have said so. But to blame and assume ALL THE MEN who share similar background as the assaulters are also guilty is just wrong.
  14. Every time someone brings up what is happening in Europe as a reason to fear Middle Eastern immigrants/refugees, they are implying that somehow or other, we could be overun by a million people from the Middle East in a matter of months. They never explain how that could possibly happen, because obviously it could not, they just repeat the same scary, thoughtless and ridiculous "warning". No doubt any country faced with millions of people arriving on it's doorsteps is going to have difficulties, regardless of where those millions of people come from. No doubt, Canada will face the same issues if/when climate refugees start arriving on our doorstep. You mean, that some groups hold rallies or marches because they want certain things? Or maybe they petition a government for certain considerations? Like, citizens of any country don't already do that?
  15. Kimmy, had no idea your anti-Islamic propaganda went back so far on this site! And to think I had you mistaken for someone who was at least a little open-minded on this issue! Anyway, what else have the 'evil Muslims' been doing? https://www.ted.com/talks/maajid_nawaz_a_global_culture_to_fight_extremism?language=en-- Muslim speaker calls for grassroots movement to expand democracy https://www.scenesofreason.com/muslims-against-islamic-extremism/ More Muslims fighting extremists https://www.facebook.com/Muslims-against-Muslim-Extremists-131364270225056/-- A Facebook page, dedicated to Muslims against Islamic extremism https://twitter.com/refugeecouncil/status/687610719345479680- Syrian men in Germany condemn attacks on women. Etc.
  16. Please provide back-up for your implication that JT is bringing in over a million refugees in a single 12-month-period. Unless that is the plan and actually could happen (given the complaint among some that we can't even manage 10,000 in three months), we have no chance of facing the same problems Europe is facing.
  17. Actually nothing to do with it. The news story said that a law was proposed to raise the legal age of marriage from 16 to 18, and to bring in harsher penalties for child-marriage. The law was not passed, in part due to the efforts of clergy who would prefer no limit be imposed. Your attempt to make this into "see, Muslims are pedophiles" fails badly for the following reasons: 1. Canada allows marriages of 16-year-olds; if you condemn Iran, you must also condemn Canada. 2. Several US States have no legal minimum marriage age; a few allow marriages of 12, 13 and 14 year olds. If you condemn Iran for it's legal minimum marriage age of 16, you must also condemn the States. 3. A few States fail to have any legal minimums at all; if you condemn these Iranian clerics who don't want legal minimums, you must also condemn those States who fail to have legal minimums. 4. Further, if you are going to judge and condemn all Muslims as pedophiles for what some group of Iranian clerics want but did not achieve, then you must also condemn all the people as pedophiles in those States and countries which legally allow for marriages of kids under 18 and all those people in the States who have no minimum marriage age at all.
  18. Since non-progressives seeking to marginalize a certain group tend to use the same arguments to do it (barbaric, uncivilized, will steal all your stuff, will take over your country, will murder you, rape your wives and daughters, etc.,), I've no doubt that progressives throughout history have "trotted out" perspective and reality. Seems the progressives are winning, too: Blacks can now ride in the front of the bus; Japanese have been apologized to by the Canadian government and been provided compensation; Jews have had the world apologizing for decades; First Nations people are in the process of having their various wrongs acknowledged and redressed. You'd think non-progressives would figure it out: xenophobia always looks stupid and unnecessary in hindsight.
  19. For the point that predominantly White men, or even White American men are the most likely to commit mass murders (in the US, anyway). So should we now be generally afraid of White men, or White American men? The answer to that, in case you were wondering, would be "NO", because what a few do is not a prediction of what the many will do. Anyway, it's not a 'questionable' racial assertion; it's fairly proven out in various statistics and iirc, applies around the globe, not just in America. But as it's off-topic to this thread, I'm not going to research.
  20. The quote you linked to, which I presume is this one, does not claim that "only white people commit pedophilia". The news story you linked to says this: If a law allowing marriage between 16-year-olds is pedophiliac, then Canada is also a nation of pedophiles, since we also allow 16-year-olds to marry. No doubt you are intending to reference this part of the news story: "Clerics on the council object to minimum age requirements, arguing instead that an individual can marry once reaching puberty, which can be as early as the age of 9.", Given your continuing lack of reading comprehension, it probably comes as a surprise to you that 9-year-olds marrying is NOT the law in Iran; it's merely what some clerics think is a good idea. You can find Catholic clerics in various countries who'd also ok such young marriages. Do some research on Ecuador and Columbia. It may also surprise you to learn that not a single person on this board has ever said they support pedophilia of any kind, by any person, in any country. Nor has anyone said they support children getting married.
  21. Also, the last time I checked with Telus about transferring my tv/internet over to them, they wanted $500 up front. Can't imagine they'd want anything less from a refugee who only wants to sign up for phone service.
  22. Where was that claim made? Or are you assuming that when someone (such as myself) points out that the those things you are using as a reason to limit or eliminate immigration from the Middle Eastern region, is also practiced in your culture/region, they are somehow also claiming it doesn't happen anywhere else?
  23. Brilliant marketing move by Wind Mobile. I haven't seen the story, but I bet the term is limited to three or six months; after that, they'll likely have pretty loyal customers for a long time. Also good to know that Argus isn't going to be on the hook for all the minutes these people are going to be using. I was worried for a minute there, when Argus said he was paying for these cell phones and plans.
  24. All I have is a cell phone, so yeah - you DO search for work on a cell phone. And it works, too ... I got a job just last week when I got a phone call on my cell phone and someone saying "When can you start?" Well of course - in the world of 'refugees deserve nothing', there are all kinds of perks: thousands of dollars per month, luxurious free residences, gourmet foods and, last but not least, libraries and library staff providing free personal services.
