  1. Toronto. That's sort of Canada. Khadr is a peculiar case for the right to be obsessed about. As we all know, there are so many extenuating circumstances to his story and trial , you'd think they would pick a more deserving villain to boo and hiss at.
  2. There was something very likeable about him. I never felt he was reading from somebody else's script. We have been blessed with good Finance Mnisters in this country for decades.
  3. She is keeping a very low profile. I am not sure I know which federal party she would actually like to lead, if any. She's a bit ambiguous on that front, a LINO, if you will.
  4. Good. What exactly did he say? No wiggle room, I hope. This is of serious concern to any new Canadian.
  5. It's not enough for Kenney to 'clarify' Harper's words: http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-election-2015-citizenship-terrorism-1.3254095 Harper himself needs to make an unambiguous statement that no attempt will be made to revoke citizenship for other crimes, given it was he who raised this alarming possibility.
  6. I suspect the defence will have something to say about that. This case does not have the proverbial snowball's chance in Hell of getting anywhere. It's pure Reform Party old style race and religion hysteria. We all know that, right? Far stronger cases have been rejected by the Supreme Court, if it ever gets that far, which I very much doubt.
  7. Maybe we should start the learning experience by spelling it correctly? Nothing Quebec could do would surprise a 'progressive' like me.
  8. It may be difficult for you to understand. And, legally speaking, it is going to be an expensive learning experience for us all.
  9. In the Gaya case, that is not even true. He is not a dual citizen.
  10. The government is unleashing dark forces here that may be hard to put back in the bottle.
  11. That is the obvious tactic for other countries to employ. Why should they take our maniacs? The jihadi market is kinda saturated in Pakistan. This particular case is preposterous. No country with rule of law will let this stand - to exile somebody to a country they have never visited. It's like the Romans sending Ovid off to the Black Sea coast. Even Harper must know that.
  12. Did anybody see Parm Gill on Power and Politics tonight? He was unaware of the Gaya case and had to ask Rosie Barton about it. Rarely are Government spokespersons so poorly prepared on a fairly hot topic.
  13. FPTP only allows simple choices: no choice between candidates of the same party and only two choices at the national level effectively. For example, Rob Anders would never have survived as a Conservative MP if voters in Calgary could have voted for another person from the same party.
  14. No, what I mean is this. No country has revoked the other citizenship of a Canadian dual citizen yet e.g. Australian Canadian loses Australian citizenship. I can see a lot of work for lawyers here.
  15. What will you do if they revoke the other citizenship first? Or if the other country sends them back?
  16. They have not done so to any Canadians yet that I know of.
  17. It's not hard to foresee a scenario where lawyers for the defendants will contact embassies to get revocation in the other country fast-tracked before it even gets started here.
  18. By revoking dual citizenship? Really?
  19. You would not want my tax bill. I stand to benefit personally from more Harper.
  20. My support for PR goes back decades and it is not just about Harper, or even Canada. I would like to see a government supported by a majority of voters which we have not had in Canada for more than twenty years.
  21. There are a lot of legal issues, though. The Nazis were immigrants who were deported for lying on their citizenship applications. Nobody wants these guys - is it a friendly act to an ally to send them over there when we have raised them? All Pakistan (or the UK, what about that scenario?) need to do is revoke first. And what if they start sending Canadians back here?
  22. You are saying the Conservatives will get a majority of seats? I think it's a little premature for that. As a clear majority of voters, non-Conservatives can still win this election, or at the very least stop a Harper majority, by coalescing behind Trudeau.
  23. Well, on the bright side, my income tax bill won't go up if the Conservatives stay in power. It's not all negative.
  24. The party machine types would never allow somebody like that to become leader. I would certainly consider voting for them if they did.
  25. They are centrist on some issues - abortion, the economy - but they are the only party that appeal to the Reform crowd. Nobody else is competing for that vote. Their left wing is the old PC end and the right is beyond Reform. Conservatives have never gotten near getting a majority of the popular vote. Most people in this country are to the left of the Conservatives. That is where their paranoia about the media etc. comes from. The BQ compete with them for the xenophobe vote in Quebec. And who is talking about 'Socialists' here and nationalizing the means of production etc? That's usually a pejorative term for someone to the left of the person using it. There are no big socialist parties in Canada.
