Canada To Launch Airstrikes Against ISIL
Derek 2.0 replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
What report? That a small, lightly armed, untrained Kurdish Force was losing ground to a far larger, heavily armed, semi trained ISIS force in a built up area? How did ISIS contend with a larger, heavily armed, semi trained Iraqi force, supported by US air power in Mosul? -

Indeed, and six aircraft equates to two aircraft over a portion of Iraq, short-term, 24/7 and 50-70% of the time sustained over the course of six months. -
I agree.......and would have been far more concerned if the Liberals had their own Muclair......

Where is it being reported that airstrikes are only marginally helpful? Airstrikes alone won't win the fight against ISIS, but are an important part of the puzzle with conventional warfare since the dawn of manned flight. -

You feel the Iraqi army and Kurds don't want air support, support that would provide a distinct advantage over ISIS????? -

So how would he leverage further votes from within his own base? -
How Trudeau is winning my vote
Derek 2.0 replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well no, its not always either/or.........Canada is contributing aid, but much of that aid is actually Eastern European supplied munitions, and our part is delivering it from those allies to the Iraqis and Kurds.....You could triple the amount of water/food/blankets/medical supplies etc you send, but what good is it when the Iraqi army and Kurds run out of bullets? Both women and children won't fend off ISIS which bottled water and rice........ As to the fighters, but also the ISR aircraft, these aircraft offer something both the Kurds and Iraqis do not have, well giving them a huge advantage over ISIS. Likewise the provision of special forces to both train and target smart munitions for the Iraqis and Kurds......I don't oppose the notion of delivering more humanitarian aid, and would add engineers and medical personal to the mix, but the threat ISIS poses has to be reduced to create a safe environment first. As to the actual need of our aircraft, as I've said before, our contribution paired with that of the Dutch, Danes, Belgians and Australians equals that of the strike wing of one United States aircraft carrier....nothing to scoff at, well allowing the Americans to utilize the like number of aircraft elsewhere against ISIS. -

Make points? What was JT doing in his reference to them? -

Not quite, the result was the making of both incomplete training, coupled with the gutting of the Sunni officer corps by the Shia majority Government. -

No, I understand both current and future threat requirements.........nor have I disparaged the capability of the current fleet in terms of meeting the requirements of the elected Government.......our Hornets are more then able to contend with the (low) threat matrix that ISIS poses in Iraq, that is not to say that in a differing environment there would be no issues to contend with, likewise future threat environments. -
It does, by far the radars/combat system are the most expensive, well vital, part of the build.

Rather simplistic, but I agree, likewise (as confirmed by Obama's former Defense Secretary on tonight's Factor) could have been prevented by keeping a small force in Iraq to further train the Iraqi military, with provisions for more technical support in place if required. -

Without a doubt, the Hornet presently is a modern combat aircraft, and combined with the men and women that fly and service them, just as capable as those being currently flown by the USN against ISIS........again baseless talking point. Perhaps by intent, but comparisons drawn around such quips are offensive to a great many.........And no "cover" is required, my eldest is in the RCAF. -
On the Danish Frigate? All three designs differed above the hull/main deck.....

Something to the effect of Canada's aged fighters not being up to the task......made as a statement last Thursday(?). As to "whipping out", perhaps you can understand why some would take umbrage, namely those with a daughter within the RCAF, to being depicted as an extension of ones political machismo by a person that could very well send these men and women to war in the future...... -

The democratic Government of Iraq has requested for such intervention presently......Saddam, not so much. -
Bingo......not only do bad things happen when we don't have oil, but based on global economic realities, other nations like China etc upset the card table.....

Both his whipping out remarks and questioning of the capability of the RCAF.........Both very offensive to past and present serving members, much like the NDP's Pat Martin's homage to GI Joes....... -

For sure......and is why they draw parallels between Iraq 2003 and Iraq 2014......even though the circumstances are drastically different. -

Attempt to inflame? Do you not think Trudeau's disparaging (and baseless) remarks about the Canadian Forces were an attempt to inflame (and crack a few jokes) at the expense of the men and women in the armed forces? Now answer the question posed of you.......you suggested ISIS wasn't our mess to clean up, do you share that meme with the Second World War? Korea? How about Rwanda?
