  1. I've been to way to many government funerals, and for the most part the family has a huge say in what type of service they want, and if they are not that religious then often a blended service is given, to cover all in attendance. I think the most important part of this entire post is their family and their comrades got to say their final goodbyes, honor them they way tradition has laid out, to show the family he was a outstanding person, that gave their life to serve their community. Not many grasp the importance of that. The entire thing is to help the living carry on , to start the grieving process, It has nothing to do with what was said or not said during a prayer. And I'm certain that god will accept him regardless of what was said on the ground...

  3. You make things up, like this business of a poster saying Jews are funding BLM or something. You just pulled that out of the air. You call moderate people Nazis and fascists and fail to see the log in your eye on radical left violence. You’re no better than a right wing radical, but what’s worse is that you call everyone who is moderate a radical.

  4. The words used to describe political positioning tend to be subjective. They also move around with time. Perhaps one of the problems is that no one takes Communism seriously, as if it doesn't exist. I tend to reflexively think this myself at times, so if we remove Communism from the political spectrum what should we term a position just to the right of where Communism ought to be? On the other side, we have people who refer to almost anyone even slightly right of centre on a single issue as 'Far right". And I think this is much more commonly used and as a pejorative. Tossing it back in the other direction is also a reflexive thing sometimes, depending on my mood and with whom and on what subject I've recently been talking. I'll concede suggesting academia is governed by the 'far left' was too inexact. Perhaps substituting 'progressives' would have been more accurate. As for Jordan and Marxists in colleges, I don't have much difficulty understanding what he means in that the new holy mecca of the progressive left is 'equity', meaning equality of outcomes for all regardless of their actual value, abilities, intelligence, efforts and productivity. It's the same sort of belief Marxism has been touting for a century that there should be no classes, no rich and no poor (which always just makes everyone poor in the end). Thus we have equity activists ending honors programs and programs for the gifted at schools, dropping college entrance exams and mandating the admission of people by identity group rather than abilities. In some areas, they're even watering down the curriculum and testing in order to ensure members of specific identity groups not noted for their devotion to studies graduate at the same rate as those who are. It's a profoundly anti-intellectual demand that everyone accepts that every individual is not an individual at all but simply part of a group, a cog as interchangeable as any other. And so every group must perform identically to every other group.

  6. The biggest authoritarian threats right now are from the left. That wasn’t true not that long ago. Basically the radical left is running formerly moderate liberal parties, universities, large organizations, and almost all media. Not toeing the line runs the risk of losing employment and status, to the extent of cancellation and erasure.

  7. Well, to begin with, I don't believe the US Republicans are conservatives. So your explanations falter there. There is nothing conservative about Trump or his supporters. And the Republican party is now mostly about catering to the moneymen who fund their campaigns. Both parties in the US are corrupt. Both sides call for book bans. And ANTIFA is well known for its violence. Also, the US Republican Party is not the focus of conservatism. There are actual conservative parties elsewhere in the world. But they don't acknowledge policing as corrupt. They only say it is racist. A black man gets knelt on and dies and there's wall-to-wall coverage across America for months. A white man gets knelt on and dies and crickets chirp. The police who did it are not only not charged, they're not fired. And no one cares. Yeah, right-wing media doesn't ignore mass shooters, nor defend people who murder LGBT people (examples?) BTW, according to this, 25% of mass shooters are Black, which is almost double their percentage in the population. Not about transgenderism, you're not. This is the only forum I know where if I say that there are only two genders and a man can't be a woman I won't get permanently banned. And needless to say, you'll face disciplinary measures if you say something like that at work or school. In fact, we recently saw a high school student suspended from his school for the entire term for saying that very thing.

  8. Chris Harrison – The longtime host of ABC’s “The Bachelor” franchise decided to “step aside” after defending current contestant Rachael Kirkconnell when old photos surfaced of her attending an Old South antebellum party. “While I do not speak for Rachael Kirkconnell, my intentions were simply to ask for grace in offering her an opportunity to speak on her own behalf,” Harrison explained. “What I now realize I have done is cause harm by wrongly speaking in a manner that perpetuates racism, and for that I am so deeply sorry.” Adam Rubenstein — The former New York Times opinion editor and writer resigned from the paper in December, six months after its staff went into an uproar over a piece he edited by Sen. Tom Cotton. The column by Arkansas Republican argued for the federal government to “send in the troops” to quell violence in cities throughout the country in response to civil unrest following the death of George Floyd. Former editor Mari Weiss wrote on Twitter about the resignation: “Adam was hung out to dry by his own colleagues. Then he and his work were lied about, including in this mendacious editor’s note.” Gina Carano — The “Mandalorian” actress was fired by Disney after posting on social media that being a Republican in 2021 was similar to being Jewish during Nazi Germany. Her Hollywood agent dropped her, and Hasbro scrapped her “Star Wars” action figures. Matthew Yglesias — The liberal opinion writer resigned from Vox, a publication he co-founded, after many of his woke colleagues found his articles too right of center. Mr. Yglesias argued against defunding the police this summer and took aim at the liberal term “Latinx” as alienating many people from progressive politics and the Democratic Party. He has since joined Substack, so he can voice his opinions more freely. Zac Kreugman — Data scientist for Reuters news fired for criticizing the Black Lives Matter movement in the company’s internal communications forum, debunking Reuters’s own biased reporting, and violating a corporate taboo. Driven by what he called a “moral obligation” to speak out, Kriegman refused to celebrate unquestioningly the BLM narrative and his company’s “diversity and inclusion” programming; to the contrary, he argued that Reuters was exhibiting significant left-wing bias in the newsroom and that the ongoing BLM protests, riots, and calls to “defund the police” would wreak havoc on minority communities. Donald McNeil Jr. — Veteran New York Times reporter forced out after 150 employees demanded his head. His crime? McNeil, 67, went as a representative of the Times on a 2019 trip with American high school students in Peru. There, according to his farewell note to colleagues—which, tellingly, was the first time the context of his career-ending comments had ever been reported during the 8-day life cycle of this journalism-world controversy—McNeil "was asked at dinner by a student whether I thought a classmate of hers should have been suspended for a video she had made as a 12-year-old in which she used a racial slur. To understand what was in the video, I asked if she had called someone else the slur or whether she was rapping or quoting a book title. In asking the question, I used the slur itself."

  9. Fact is that there was no reason to stray inland from the 'coastal strip' . . . . old growth stands of hemlock/spruce/red cedar on the west side of VI and north coast are virtually barren in regard to understory/brush/berry/food producing vegetation. There was no need to penetrate the coastal vegetation to any great degree because everything to sustain the coastal tribes was at their fingertips along the coast. Their claims of everything 'as far as the eye can see' are bogus, and should be treated as such. The horse cultures of the prairies were a different story however . . . mobile natives competing with other mobile tribes for a mobile/seasonal food source . . . . the old scars run deep back there.

  10. There are layers upon layers of stupidity in your post. The shooter is trans, that's been known for a long time now, but the MSM is waiting for the emotion to fade before they allow that connection to be made. They do the same with islamic terrorist attacks. "Just because he yelled 'allahu akbar' before he blew himself up at the Ariana Grande concert doesn't mean that he was a muslim." That confusion sticks with people. The association isn't made. The shooter's manifesto would have been online within hours of the shooting if there was even one sentence in it that could be editorialized into aiding the Dems' false narratives about "ULTRA SUPER DUPER EXTREME MAGA TERRORISTS!!!!!!!!" For whatever reason, we aren't allowed to know what it says.

  11. Wow. Lie harder. For conservatives it is about smaller gov't. Smaller gov't. less taxes, more rights, less gov't interference in our lives. That's what we like. And how thick do you have to be to tell conservatives that they don't know what conservatives are all about That's like a straight white guy telling a lesbian what lesbians like. The left wing, being much more authortarian, is the one who's fond of big gov't.

  12. I know what a liberal is supposed to be. That doesn't mean that's what a Liberal is. Certainly not THESE Liberals. Just to start with, respect for opinions different from ones own is just not there anymore. Trudeau made that clear when he stated, out of the blue and without consulting anyone else that no one who was pro-life could run for office in his party anymore. Likewise, anyone opposed to gay marriage, and probably now against trans rights. And I would say the same holds true for today's 'liberals' at colleges and universities unless we call them progressives or something new. And much of the adherence to identity politics and culture war stuff is profoundly illiberal. Including, as I said, the insistence you can't question it if a six-foot-four man with a beard suddenly decides he wishes to now be referred to as a woman and enter boxing or wrestling matches against women.

  13. What about the Fraser River watershed. That extends way to somewhere around Jasper in north east B.C. in the Rockie Moutains. The Skeena River watershed extends from Prince Rupert on the coast hundreds of kilometers inland into the northwest B.C. Sounds like a good argument to claim half the province. Just pick any geographic feature and make your claim. Canada or B.C. will pay, and pay, and pay forever. I grew up in the coastal mountains. So the whole coastal mountain range is mine argument.

  14. Coastal claims are often based on the watersheds that provide necessities critical to coastal people, like salmon for example. Boundaries based on biogeophysical features such as watersheds are common throughout the world and have been for centuries.

  16. No, it's not a racist term. If red power is a racist term, so is black lives matter a racist term. So is white supremacy a racist term. It's only racist to the woke who refuse to live in reality. Red power is a real thing. Do you know what it means? It's a political power group that thinks white people have no right to be in north America and everything belongs to them.

She could hold her own, but let's not kid ourselves here, there was a massive size and speed disadvantage. She was keeping up, at best. Point am making is you're right. In some instances it won't matter that a biological male is competing with a biological woman. However, it should never occur in any sports where the edge would go to the trans athlete. There is no longer a level playing field, once this is the case.

  21. Are you suggesting liberals aren't left wing? I think that on this particular topic of identity politics and culture wars most of us who are conservatives have come to think of anyone on the diversity, equity and inclusiveness bandwagon as "left wing". Equity is equality of results vs equality of opportunity and strikes most of us as Marxian/socialist.

  22. It was still considered to be 'international law' at the time. All european countries still respected it. Again - not just religion, also politics. That's because you're not listening. THat's what passed for international law in those days and it was recognized by all countries. It is the principle they operated under. There wasn't even a canada when this was happening, and wouldn't be for hundreds of years. But - the question is who has the right to the land. If i steal the title to your house and sell it to someone and run off with the money - who owns the house? The people who bought did so in good faith and registered title, but they bought from someone who had no right to sell. The original owner didn't sell it and legally owned it - but now he doesn't have title to it and has recieved no compensation. How do you resolve that. Either the buyer has to give up the home or the seller has to lose their property - or there has to be some species of compromise where they both take a hit but get some compensation. This actually happens in Canada and there is law around it and it doesnt' favor the first nations. So it's probably not going to have a MASSIVE impact. But - it can play a bit of a role and it's something the first nations have been pushing for for a very long time.

  23. Well that was brutally complex to read. It seems like they get some of the provincial share of the hst back but i'm not sure all (if i'm reading this right Charities resident in Ontario can claim a PSB rebate of 50% of GST and the federal part (5%) of HST. With the introduction of HST in Ontario, charities resident in Ontario will also be entitled to a PSB rebate of 82% of the provincial part (8%) of HST. Charities resident in British Columbia can claim a PSB rebate of 50% of the GST (5%) and the federal part (5%) of HST. With the introduction of HST in British Columbia, charities resident in British Columbia will also be entitled to claim a PSB rebate of 57% of the provincial part (7%) of HST. Now - HST was cancelled in BC some time ago and we're back to pst and gst. BUt - it seems they still have to pay SOME of the tax. And in ontario they'll be paying property tax (i THINK they already did in bc). So there's still SOME taxes paid by a church. I think - why the hell is it that complex? It's a frikkin' charity, it would be cheaper just to tax them than it is for them to pay for an accountant to figure that crap out.

  25. It formed the legal basis for the claiming of the land by the British. It basically said if you found land previously unknown to europe, your country gets to have it. And it was the church that 'authorized' that back in the day so to speak. Refuting it is like overturning roe vs wade. It basically says that Britian really didn't have the right to claim canada essentially. When the king granted the hudsons bay company rights to 'all land that drains into hudson's bay', he had no right to do so essentialy. So it does potentially have an impact on land claims today. I keep trying to tell you - the roman catholic church is every bit as much a political org as a religious org. You keep acting surprised and confused when they're involved in politics.
    1 point
  26. Not to pick a fight but it's worth just mentioning a couple of things, and it's not to defend churches per se but just to add some clarity to why they are tax exempt. There's some reasons beyond this but these address your points above. Expenses are tax deductable for "For Profit" businesses. There's no tax deduction for a church because it pays no income tax. But - unlike a business for example, as a not for profit it DOES pay taxes like GST on everything it buys and it's unable to pass that along. So to be clear, churches DO pay tax. just not revenue based taxes. And tax 'deductions' don't benefit them. When a church sells it's building for a 'profit' (ie more than it paid), that money must remain in the church. It can't actually be USED as profit. A business could take that money and give it to the owners of the business - but the church cannot do that. So while there's "profit" nobody can touch it. Now - they can use it to pay salaries and the like and of course buy new buildings and such but it's not "profit" the way it is for a business who could then distribute it to the owner of the business. But the main reasons a church is exempt are this - 1) - you can't "Charge" people for their faith. You can't "tax" people for their religious beliefs. Churches don't SELL their services, they recieve DONATIONS. Donations is another word for 'gift'. We don't tax gifts, because the giver has already paid taxes on that money and is simply gifting the money to someone else. 2) churches DID provide a public service for centuries. They were the official 'agent of record" for communities. When someone got married it was recorded in the church, not the gov't office. Deaths and births likewise were so. And even after the gov't started keeping records the church records were considered important and definitive, often gov't records were lost but the church records were considered proof. So there is some reason why we don't tax churches. They are a not for profit and it would be an infringement on people's right to religious freedom to tax their income again for their religious beliefs.

  27. One can acknowledge the bias of a news institution, while acknowledging that they attempt to be objective in certain facets and also that the information landscape would be worse without it. Pretty much every country has state funded media, and it's easy to understand why. I will chalk up the odd dichotomy of trusting one government - funded source over another one, and furthermore choosing a foreign owned one while decrying foreign interference as... simple ignorance. Because I am generous and not a conspiracy theorist.

That's still guilty ESPECIALLY in the US where accessories to crimes are just a guilty as those who commit them. I get that you lefties really like to try to excuse your violence - but there's no excuse. Sorry. This is how stupid the left is. You would watch cities burning and pretend nothing happened and even if it did it's just the right exaggerating. Sorry - you're part of a violent and destructive group. What is it with you and Jews? What do you have against the jews that you keep bringing them up and trying to make them responsible for this. Seriously - why does the left hate the jews so much? Is it an authortarian thing? 31. Kind of like those trying to cancel the past? Trying to cancel freedom of speech? Liberalism encapsulates the rule of law. You mean those who try to destroy it? Feeling society has to be destroyed in order to rebuild it, without a care of who gets destroyed along with it (such as the communities you're so called fighting for)? Logic, is understanding the past, learning from it, and growing from it. Trying to erase it because its offensive, doesn't fix anything. This is the SJW I'm eluding to. If this is not you, all the power to you. Keep using your voice. If you are the above, then you are part of a privileged group of youth with zero life experience, and a megaphone yet zero understanding of how a wise man knows when to pick their battles. How does she like transphobia? What is the level of transphobia that she has demonstrably liked? Please elaborate. Care to present an example? Because they're different? In sports where speed, reflexes or physicality give you an edge, a biological male has zero business competing with biological women in competitive sports beyond a certain age. Period. If this is the "transphobia" you're trying to end, you need to start by stopping the use of calling any facts refuting your opinions as transphobic. Words like woke and transphobic have lost their meaning, as they're used to silence opposition.

  34. So this is a common righty talking-point. It basically goes that the civil rights movements of the past were good, but the ones of today are bad. And then they'll say "woke" a lot. The truth is that literally everything conservatives are saying today were said back then too. All of the lies about BLM being violent, even though the vast majority of their marches are peaceful, that was said back then too. Most "woke" people just being virtue-signaling white people, that was also used back then. No, they're not "angry on behalf of other people." They see injustice and want to fix it. I want to end transphobia. The fact that some trans people, like Blaire White, like transphobia because she profits off of it means nothing. She's wrong. And really, you can tell this talking-point is bullshit because of how inconsistent it is. If I'm against transphobia, I'm "angry on behalf" of trans people. If I want to end classism but I'm not rich myself, then it's that I'm just angry at rich people. It's a bad faith point that conservatives use to deflect. This is also why Republicans never define "woke." They can't openly admit that they're against justice. So they just say they hate woke. That's why nobody can define woke anymore, it's lost all meaning. And then when people in office try to pass bills that would help with injustice, the Republicans vote against it because it's "woke." It's not that you think "woke" people are lazy. You vote against them doing things. Sports leagues already test people on a case by case basis to see if they qualify. Why make the rules different for trans people?

There's an old saying - if 10,000 people think you're an asswipe, and you think you're NOT an asswipe, it really doesn't matter at that point if you're right or not. Something you're doing needs to change.

This country could do so well if the regulatory and tax burdens were lifted off a little, but instead, we get more borrowing, which means an increasing debt servicing cost that will rise to $50 billion in a few years - or sooner if inflation rises. That's just a waste of money. That's almost twice what we spend on defense. and it's only going to get worse.

The 35 million went to first nations to organize events around the pope apologizing for the church's role in residential schools. The first nations wanted the pople to come apologize - he did - they got money so that they could have events and such connected with that. He's trying to make it sound like we gave teh pope 35 million for coming over. Now - fun fact we did pay 20 million or so for his security. But he's the head of a state, and he was here on political business. Of course we paid for the security.

The true debate is on GUN REGISTRY which does absolutely nothing to stop these types of things and is just another tax on law abiding gun owners. The VAST MAJORITY of mass shootings in the US are related to drug cartels and organized crime, many of whom cannot legally carry anyway, but get their supply from an open southern border smuggled from places like Brazil which the DEMOCRATS don't wish to do anything about.
