Hardy first entered territorial politics in 1996, but was narrowly defeated in the 2000 territorial election. In 2002, he became Yukon NDP leader and also regained his Whitehorse Centre seat that year. He served as leader of the Official Opposition from 2002-2006.
He is a committed politician. Despite being diagnosed with leukemia and being sent to Vancouver for treatment, Hardy campaigned in the 2006 election from his hospital bed. He had almost daily telephone conference calls with NDP candidates and the media. He returned to Whitehorse a mere week before the vote, and managed to win his seat. Unfortunately, although his party led in the polls for months prior to the election, the NDP were reduced to three seats, placing third in the final tally.
As party leader, Hardy retains critic responsibilities for the Executive Council Office, the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, the Department of Finance, the Public Service Commission, the Women’s Directorate, the Yukon Development Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation.
He was born on May 17, 1957, in Murraysville, BC. He moved to the Yukon while he was a teenager. Hardy has been a journeyman carpenter for more than two decades, and is also a small business owner. His wife Louise served as a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2000, representing the riding of Yukon. They have four children and one grandchild.
