Alward assumed his party’s leadership in October 2008. He has been a member of the provincial legislature since 1999. Alward is a member of the standing committee on Crown Corporations and is the critic for post-secondary education, training and labour, the Labour and Employment Board, and the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission.

He has also served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Oceans.
Prior to entering politics, Alward was self-employed as a human resource and community development consultant from 1996–1999, and he worked with Canada Customs and Human Resource Development Canada from 1982–1996.
Born in Beverley, Massachusetts, Alward earned a BA in psychology from Bryan College in Tennessee. He is married to Rhonda Stairs, and they have two grown sons, Jonathan and Benjamin. Alward and his family operate a small family farm and woodlot in Riceville, NB. His community involvement has included volunteering with Saint John Ambulance, serving as a volunteer firefighter with Meductic Fire Department and serving on various commissions and committees.
