Arthur Mitchell is Leader of the Official Opposition and the Yukon Liberal Party. He represents the riding of Copperbelt.
Mitchell became party leader in 2005, and was elected to the Legislative Assembly in a by-election held on November 21, 2005. In addition to his roles as Official Opposition and party leader, Mitchell has critic responsibilities for the Executive Council Office, Economic Development, Environment, Finance, Health, Tourism and Culture, the Yukon Development Corporation, and the Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health & Safety Board. Also, Mitchell is the Third Party House Leader.
Before territorial politics, Mitchell was a strong business and community leader. He owned the Atlin General Store for 26 years. He has also worked as the Yukon Chamber of Commerce’s executive director, as a business consultant, realtor and property developer. Other significant accomplishments included serving as alternate chair of the Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health & Safety Board, and as a board member and Finance Committee member of the Yukon Arts Centre Board. Mitchell has previously served for several years at the City of Whitehorse’s Parks and Recreation Committee, which included serving as chair for one year.
Mitchell was born in Whitehorse in 1950. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. He lives in the riding of Copperbelt with his wife Nancy. They have two adult children, Rachel and Josh. As part of his community life, Mitchell has volunteered for many years for the Food for Learning Breakfast Program. He is also a former member of the Elijah Smith Elementary School Council.
